New Carrier Heads to Mideast to Relieve USS Lincoln

The Navy is sending a fresh aircraft carrier to the Middle East to replace the USS Abraham Lincoln, whose 5,000 sailors have logged more than 250 straight days at sea supporting the Iran war, with no port call in 200 days.

The deployment drew Senate scrutiny after families told Navy leadership that several sailors had tried to jump overboard in recent months. Navy officials deny that suicide attempts have increased.

Secretary of War Pete Hegseth says conditions aboard have been "completely misrepresented." He told the media, "I have more respect and gratitude for those sailors than anybody."

Officials say the carrier swap was planned before the complaints. The blockade of Iran grinds on even as Washington and Tehran exchange messages about possible negotiations.

Flock Sets New Safeguards in Face of Backlash

Flock Safety, the company behind more than 120,000 license plate cameras nationwide, announced sweeping reforms Thursday following a bipartisan backlash over mass surveillance and police misuse of its network. The biggest change: Images will now be deleted after seven days instead of 30.

By the end of 2026, officers must attach a case number to every search, and a system that flags abnormal activity becomes mandatory, locking users out until an administrator reviews.

The changes follow arrests of officers who ran plates on romantic partners. CEO Garrett Langley conceded the company should have required case codes from the start: "We got that one wrong."

Critics want more. Knox County Mayor Glenn Jacobs has called for a nationwide pause until constitutional guardrails are in place.

List: Ranking Car Thefts by State

A car is stolen every 48 seconds in America, and where you live matters. California leads the nation's theft rankings at 348 thefts per 100,000 residents, nearly nine times the rate in last-place New Hampshire.

Nevada and New Mexico tied for second at 318, with Missouri, Colorado, Maryland, and Texas close behind. The safest are northern New England and the northern Rockies: New Hampshire, Idaho, Maine, and Wyoming all came in under 75.

There's good news underneath: thefts are falling fast. The National Insurance Crime Bureau counted 659,880 stolen vehicles in 2025, down 23% from the year before, with California alone shedding 45,000 thefts.

Thieves still have a favorite: the Hyundai Elantra was America's most-stolen car last year, with 21,732 taken, followed by the Honda Accord. See your state here.
