Good morning! On this day in 1851, the U.S. schooner America beat Britain in a race around the Isle of Wight, claiming a silver trophy later gifted to the New York Yacht Club for perpetual international competition. That prize, the “America’s Cup,” is now the world’s oldest continuously contested internatioinal sporting trophy. It may come as no surprise that older retirees are the generation most likely to have completely paid off their home mortgages. But it was a surprise to see how high the actual numbers are, according to our story below: roughly 75% of retired homeowners in that age group own their homes outright, and that percentage goes up even higher for older owners. What’s your situation? Take today's poll and let us know! Have you ever wondered what actually determines how long you'll live? Most people think it’s diet or exercise, but neither one cracks the top three. When researchers tracked tens of thousands of people for decades, the habits that mattered most weren't the ones anyone expected. Today on The Flyover Podcast, Amy counts down the 10 habits that actually predict longevity and reveals the number one predictor science keeps landing on. Tune in here!
Today’s sponsor, Transformation Insider, is sharing Dr. Rick Cohen’s research into an often-overlooked nutrient that may play an important role in supporting a strong, healthy heart.

Trump Drops Tariffs on Beef Imports
President Trump announced Friday that the U.S. will allow up to 300,000 metric tons of ground beef to be imported without tariffs for 90 days, his latest move to bring down prices that have surged 57% in five years. Ground beef now averages $6.89 a pound, driven by the smallest U.S. cattle herd since the 1950s. Drought and high feed costs have forced ranchers to cut back, squeezing domestic supply. Trump wrote on Truth Social that the U.S. had a commitment that the beef would sell for 25% below current market prices, though he didn't say which countries would supply it. It's the government’s second tariff waiver for beef this year, after allowing 80,000 metric tons of Argentine imports in February. The National Cattlemen’s Beef Association criticized the move, saying it would not address Trump’s stated intention of helping to increase the size of the U.S. beef herd. |
Roberts Lets Ballroom Build Continue, For Now
Chief Justice John Roberts temporarily allowed construction of the White House ballroom to continue, issuing a last-minute stay on Friday just hours before a lower court order would have halted above-ground work at midnight. The order buys the full Supreme Court time to consider President Trump's emergency appeal of a D.C. Circuit ruling that found he lacked authority to build the $400 million, 90,000-square-foot project without congressional approval. The National Trust for Historic Preservation, which brought the lawsuit challenging the demolition of the original East Wing, had urged the justices not to intervene. Roberts' order contained no explanation and doesn't signal how the court will ultimately rule on the project's legality. |
Fed Report: Homeowners with No Mortgage
Nearly three-quarters of retiree homeowners own their homes outright with no remaining mortgage, according to the latest Federal Reserve Survey of Consumer Finances. That share rises to 83% by ages 75 to 79, and 92% among those 85 and older, in stark contrast to younger generations. Census Bureau data show just 39.4% of all U.S. owner-occupied homes were mortgage-free in 2024, up from 34.4% a decade earlier. Only 45% of adults ages 25 to 34 own a home at all, compared with 81% of those 65 to 74, where ownership peaks. Higher interest rates and rising home prices have kept more owners in place long enough to pay down their loans. Owning outright can cut retirees' monthly costs significantly, though financial advisors say it isn't always the right call if it means depleting other savings. |
