Skiers Sue Alleged Resort 'Cartel'

A group of skiers is suing the four largest ski resort operators in North America, arguing they conspired to inflate prices at the country's busiest hills.

The complaint names Colorado-based Vail Resorts and Alterra Mountain Co., as well as Michigan's Boyne Resorts and Powdr in Utah.

Plaintiffs allege the operators shared confidential revenue and pricing data through annual industry reports, then set passes and lift tickets at artificially high levels.

A Vail shareholder filed a third suit on Monday, claiming the board misled investors. The companies say the claims lack merit.

Woman Ejected from Alpine Coaster

A 60-year-old Texas woman was thrown from her cart on Copper Mountain's Rocky Mountain Coaster and dragged down the metal track earlier this month, her attorneys say.

Nicola Parker's lawyers say she had her seat belt fastened, became entangled in it, and suffered a traumatic brain injury, a collapsed lung, and a separated shoulder.

Copper says patrol found the guest seated with her belt fastened, and the resort declined to give further details. Parker remains hospitalized after multiple surgeries.

The coaster is closed while Colorado's Division of Oil and Public Safety investigates. A similar ride at Purgatory is also shut down.

Weekend Guide: State Fair and More

The Colorado State Fair opens today in Pueblo and runs through Sept. 7, with rodeos, concerts, carnival rides, livestock exhibitions, and deep-fried everything.

Gate admission is $15 for adults and $7 for kids ages 5 to 12. This year's concert lineup features everyone from country star Jordan Davis and Denver-founded The Fray to hip-hop artist Vanilla Ice.

Closer to Denver, the Dragon Boat Festival returns to Sloan's Lake. In the high country, DanceAspen closes a two-night run at Aspen's Wheeler Opera House tonight with a preview of a new work set to John Denver's music.

Fort Collins, meanwhile, is celebrating the 25th annual Tour de Fat—a costumes-encouraged bicycle parade hosted by local craft brewer New Belgium. The parade begins at 9:30 a.m. Saturday.
