Crews Begin Border Wall Work despite Objections

The Trump administration has begun preconstruction work on a border wall along a stretch of the Tohono O'odham Nation in southern Arizona, pressing ahead over the tribe's objections.

Tribal leaders said contractors and armed federal agents entered the reservation early Tuesday without permission, drilling soil-sample boreholes at three locations while officers guarded the crews.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection says Congress funded the 62-mile project and a federal judge affirmed its legal authority, describing the area as a major smuggling corridor.

Chairman Verlon Jose called the entry a breach of tribal sovereignty. The Nation is appealing the ruling and contesting work near a sacred spring.

In-State Tuition for Illegal Immigrants Prompts Lawsuit

The U.S. Justice Department has sued the Arizona Board of Regents, challenging a voter-approved law that lets students without legal immigration status pay resident tuition rates at public colleges.

The complaint argues Proposition 308 conflicts with a 1998 federal statute barring residency-based college benefits for illegal immigrants and disadvantages U.S. citizens living in other states.

Department attorneys say the law's two-year high school attendance requirement serves as a proxy for residency, and asked a judge to strike the measure.

Attorney General Kris Mayes called the suit baseless, saying eligibility turns on schooling, not residency. The regents are reviewing it. Similar suits target more than a dozen states.

AG Opens Statewide Review of Flock Cameras

Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes has launched a review of Flock Safety and similar automated license plate readers used by police, examining their effect on residents' privacy.

Her office will focus on possible Fourth Amendment infringements and report to the governor and legislature. Mayes said the issue requires a statewide approach rather than city-by-city decisions.

The inquiry follows documented misuse, including an Apache Junction officer who searched for his wife. Tempe and other municipalities have since canceled their contracts.

Flock has tightened privacy and oversight controls amid the scrutiny over its camera network. Meanwhile, legislators from both parties are proposing new limits after earlier bills failed.
