Good Morning! On this day in 1849, German immigrant and famed cabinetmaker Charles Steinhagen arrived in Galveston. Many of his pieces were collected by philanthropist Ima Hogg and later donated to the University of Texas. Three friends from Argentina have spent nearly a year biking roughly 10,000 miles through 17 countries on their way to this summer's FIFA World Cup, and they just made a memorable stop in North Texas. See Et Cetera for the details. Could a single phone call or email wipe out a lifetime of savings in your family? The FBI says these three scams are responsible for billions in losses, and they're hitting older Americans harder than ever, with average victims losing $83,000. On The Flyover Podcast, Ayla Brown unpacks how each scam works, why they're so effective, and what families can do right now to protect the people they love. Tune in here! Paxton Targets Meta Over Smart Glasses
Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton launched an investigation into Meta's AI-powered smart glasses on Wednesday, saying the devices may be collecting video, audio, and facial data from Texans without consent. The Ray-Ban glasses have a small LED indicator that activates when recording, but Paxton said it can be easily hidden and doesn't activate in the device's "always enabled" mode. His office also cited reports that data annotators at Sama, a Meta subcontractor, accessed private footage—including intimate moments. Paxton cited Meta's plans to add facial recognition to the eyewear. His office previously secured a $1.4 billion settlement with Meta over unauthorized capture of Texans' facial geometry from Facebook. Paxton issued a Civil Investigative Demand to Meta to determine whether the company deceptively misrepresented its data practices under Texas law. "I will continue to relentlessly stand up to any company that threatens Texans' privacy and safety," he said. |
Flooding Threat Grows Before Holiday
Southeast Texas is facing a multiday flood threat as a stalled weather system drives repeated rounds of heavy rain through the region heading into Memorial Day weekend. Storms that swept through overnight Wednesday already dropped 2 to 4 inches across the Houston area, with coastal Brazoria County picking up 6 to 9 inches. Forecasters expect 4 to 5 more inches on already-saturated ground through the weekend. Isolated hot spots could receive up to 7 total inches of rainfall. Flooding concerns could intensify further if an upper-level low-pressure system develops over North Texas as forecast. The National Weather Service and local forecasters are urging Southeast Texans to stay off flood-prone roads and have emergency plans ready before the holiday weekend begins. |
The Best Place to Live in Texas
A Dallas-Fort Worth suburb secured the title of best place to live in Texas. Flower Mound jumped from No. 14 last year to No. 3 on U.S. News & World Report's 2026-2027 best places to live rankings. The Denton County town of roughly 80,000 stood out for its low 2.98% unemployment rate, median household income of $167,151, and median home value of $553,334. Flower Mound also topped the national best small cities subcategory. Texas claimed 10 of the top 25 spots overall. Leander, Frisco, and Sugar Land also landed top 10 spots on the list. |
