TN Gets $752M in Landmark Meta Settlement
Tennessee will receive nearly $752 million through a landmark multistate settlement with Meta over allegations that Instagram and Facebook harmed young users. Attorney General Jonathan Skrmetti said the money will go to a new Children's Digital Protection Fund supporting the mental health and safety of Tennessee kids. The deal, part of a roughly $17 billion national settlement, ends Tennessee's state-court trial, which was nearing its conclusion in Davidson County Chancery Court. It requires Meta to add time limits, overnight restrictions, stronger age verification, and expanded parental controls, resolving claims that the company designed Instagram with addictive features and misled the public about platform safety. |
Dolly Parton Remembered across America
Tennessee is mourning Queen of Country Dolly Parton, who died Tuesday at 80. Tribute sites have sprung up in spots like Dollywood, the Country Music Hall of Fame, and her Brentwood estate. Fellow artists led an outpouring of grief, as Celine Dion, Taylor Swift, and others paid tribute on social media. President Trump, as well as both of Tennessee's U.S. senators, shared messages mourning her. In New York, the Empire State Building lit up pink at 9:25 p.m., a nod to her hit 9 to 5. Sevier County landmarks and agencies also paid tribute, including its historic courthouse, which rang its bell in her honor. Parton's family has asked that donations go to her Imagination Library, which Dolly founded in honor of her father, who never learned to read. The charity has given away more than 250 million books to children. |
Here's When Tennessee's Fall Colors Will Peak
Tennessee's fall foliage is expected to arrive gradually this year, starting with occasional premature yellowing in early September as dry conditions stress some trees. Isolated patches of color should appear by mid-September, building toward moderate color at higher elevations by mid-October. West and Middle Tennessee are expected to reach peak color in late October, with Nashville's display cresting around Nov. 1. Higher elevations in the Smoky Mountains typically see their peak earlier in October. Forecasters note the timing can shift with rainfall and temperature, so a wet stretch could deepen and extend the season. |
