Heat Wave Nears Records, Austin Airport Sets Them, and a Wandering Kinkajou

Good Morning! On this day in 1986, Mary Moody Northen died at 94 in her family's Galveston mansion. At 62, she had taken over her father's insurance, banking, and hotel empire, and she ran it for the next three decades.

Postal Carriers Charged in Check Scheme

Three Houston mail carriers are among five people federally charged in a scheme prosecutors say moved nearly $24 million in checks stolen from the mail.

A federal grand jury indicted Tryston Vaughn, Catherine Kilpatrick, Drakkor Alexander, Malcolm Joubert, and Alyssa Bryant on Aug. 19. Prosecutors say Vaughn recruited Kilpatrick, Alexander, and Joubert to pull checks off their delivery routes, then resold them.

The checks were posted for sale on a Telegram channel called "slipsandchips" and shipped to buyers through FedEx. They ran from a few thousand dollars up to a $1,517,875.27 check that Joubert allegedly lifted from a Houston route in May 2024.

The conspiracy began around October 2022 and targeted accounts at Chase, Amegy, Citibank, BMO, and Stellar Bank, according to the indictment.

CeeDee Lamb's Home Burglarized

Someone climbed through a side window at Cowboys receiver CeeDee Lamb's Fairview home and walked out with more than $300,000 worth of his belongings.

Fairview police responded to the house the afternoon of July 31, while Lamb was in Oxnard, California, for training camp. People representing him met officers at the door and pointed out the broken window.

Investigators believe a single suspect got in and out that way, taking "several high-end personal items." Police records list four luxury bags among the haul. Police said Sunday they're "actively pursuing all leads," working with neighboring agencies to identify the suspect.

Lamb, 27, is not the first athlete targeted. Eagles running back Saquon Barkley's Pennsylvania home was invaded last month while his family was inside, and three men were indicted last year in a break-in at Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow's home.

Heat Wave Nears Record Books

Austin has already logged 21 triple-digit days this August, putting the all-time record for the month, 29, within reach.

Meeting that mark, set in 2011 and matched in 2023, will require century readings at Camp Mabry the rest of the month. Forecasters expect highs near 103 into midweek before the ridge of high pressure slides west.

Waco's run of consecutive 100-degree days is already long enough to rank among the 10 longest on record there. Fire danger stays very high to extreme across much of East Texas, and forecasters are asking people to hold off on any outdoor burning.

A weak cold front on Thursday is projected to bring the week's best chance of rain and could nudge East Texas highs down into the upper 90s by Friday. Laredo gets no such break, with readings near or above 105 every day of the seven-day forecast.
