Court Database Switch Keeps Inmates Jailed

A botched switch to a new court database in Leon County produced more than 1,000 errors and kept some defendants jailed past their release dates, State Attorney Jack Campbell said.

The database carries criminal and civil case records used by the clerk, state attorney, public defender, and sheriff's office. County Administrator Vince Long said migrating off a 30-year-old jail management system caused substantial operational disruption.

Campbell said the errors reopened closed cases, opened new ones, and attached charges defendants weren't facing. One defendant sat in jail six days too long, and staff have gone back to printing paper files.

Commission Chair Christian Caban called an emergency meeting for Monday at 6 p.m. and wants a new vendor. "I've completely lost trust in our existing vendor," he said.

Campbell said the county is switching the old system back on and expects it reliable by Monday.

Poinciana Hospital ICE Arrests Draw Scrutiny

Immigrant rights groups rallied outside HCA Florida Poinciana Hospital on Friday, demanding to know what protocol Polk County deputies followed when they arrested a mother and daughter on ICE detainers there.

Grace Calero, 39, and her daughter Giulianna Carriel, 19, were taken into custody Aug. 20 after a two-car crash sent them to the emergency room. Carriel, who has epilepsy, was arrested in her hospital gown.

The sheriff's office said neither woman had a criminal history or state charges, and that deputies found both had overstayed Ecuadorian visas by years. Their attorney, Phillip Arroyo, said both had pending asylum claims filed before those visas expired.

Calero has since self-deported rather than fight from jail while her daughter was also locked up. Sheriff Grady Judd declined an interview.

Dreamette Named Florida's Best Ice Cream

Dreamette, the walk-up soft serve stand that's been scooping in Jacksonville's Murray Hill since 1948, was voted Florida's best ice cream parlor in results published by Guide to Florida.

The shop is marking it with $1 small cones Saturday and Sunday at its seven Jacksonville-area locations, from Atlantic Beach to Orange Park. Vanilla, chocolate, strawberry, and swirl are included.

It opened as Creamette and took the Dreamette name in 1969. The stand still runs on recipes from the original Murray Hill window, and News4JAX Insiders voted it the city's best ice cream last November.

Dreamette added shops across Northeast Florida through the early 2020s, reaching nine locations by 2023 in neighborhoods from San Marco to the Northside.
