Grand Ole Opry Dedicates Show to Dolly Parton

The Grand Ole Opry is dedicating this evening’s Saturday night show to Dolly Parton, featuring performances of songs from her catalog and honoring her decades-long connection to Nashville.

Several artists will perform, including Carly Pearce, whose career began at Dollywood and who received a surprise Opry membership invitation from Parton in 2021. Parton's name appears on the Opry marquee through Saturday. Parton joined the Opry in 1969 and remained associated with it for more than five decades, last performing there in 2019 for her 50th anniversary.

The beloved singer-songwriter, actress, and philanthropist from East Tennessee is being honored for "her extraordinary life, legacy, and contributions to country music," according to a social media post from the Opry. "In honor of Dolly's incredible spirit of giving, a portion of ticket sales for the Aug. 29 show will be donated to Dolly Parton's Imagination Library," the post said.

Fans can hear the show on flagship station WSM AM or stream it live at 7 p.m. CT on the Opry’s YouTube channel and on the Opry’s Facebook page.

Autopsy Shows Armed Memphis Man Was Shot in the Back

An autopsy report shows Tennessee National Guard members assigned to a federal anti-crime task force fatally shot 20-year-old Tyrin Johnson in the back, contradicting earlier law enforcement accounts of the Memphis shooting.

Authorities had said Johnson, who was armed, turned toward Guard members with a handgun while fleeing after a shots-fired call near Beale Street early on July 5.

The report instead shows a single bullet entered Johnson's back and exited his chest on a slightly upward path. The medical examiner ruled the death a homicide.

No charges have been filed. A family attorney says relatives are awaiting action by the district attorney, while a state senator has requested an explanation.

Gov. Lee Grants Clemency to 34 People

Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee granted executive clemency to 34 people Thursday, issuing 33 pardons and one commutation, for Thomas Clardy, whose murder conviction has faced years of legal challenges.

Clardy, convicted in 2007 and sentenced to life, has maintained his innocence. A federal judge overturned his conviction in 2023, but an appeals court reversed that ruling, returning him to prison in 2025.

His commutation allows release on parole supervision. Pardons, official statements of forgiveness, went to people who completed their sentences, including a man who has since attended Tennessee College of Applied Technology, obtained his electrician license, and now runs an electrical contracting business.

Lee said each case was reviewed on its merits, with non-binding recommendations from the Board of Parole, and applicants not included remain eligible in the future.
