Ballot Privacy Flaw Draws Scrutiny

Security researchers warn that advances in artificial intelligence make it more urgent to fix a flaw in the state's voting equipment that can allow ballots to be matched to voters.

In a separate election-integrity move, officials removed from the voter rolls 226 convicted felons in Spalding County who are still serving sentences.

The ballot secrecy flaw—a software problem discovered in 2022—allows ballots to be reordered into the sequence in which they were cast, enabling a match to voters.

State officials say they are restricting access to sensitive records and scrambling ballot images, while the researchers say the flaw requires a software update.

Automakers Pivot to Hybrids

Kia and Hyundai are shifting more production toward hybrid vehicles at their Georgia plants as electric vehicle growth slows nationally.

EV sales are still climbing across the Southeast—the region topped 1 million cumulative sales as of June 30, with new passenger EV sales up 25% year over year—but manufacturing investment and job announcements fell for the first time in seven years.

A report from the Southern Alliance for Clean Energy and Atlas Public Policy attributes that decline to market consolidation, tougher corporate competition and uncertainty from federal policy shifts. Georgia still leads the six-state region in EV employment with more than 24,000 jobs.

The state's EV makers say they are adapting and pressing forward with planned projects despite the challenges.

Savannah Hosts Its Largest Convention

Savannah hosts the largest convention in the city's history this week, a veterinary conference with about 5,500 attendees.

The International Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Symposium runs today through Thursday at the Savannah Convention Center.

Veterinarians, technicians, and practice managers from around the world will gather for lectures, hands-on labs, and a large exhibit hall.

A recent $276 million convention center expansion allows Savannah to compete for bigger events, officials said.
