Dallas Council Backs Flock Funding

The Dallas City Council voted 12-3 Wednesday to reject a proposal removing $1.5 million in Flock funding from the proposed city budget.

Council member Adam Bazaldua proposed ending the contract and redirecting the money to neighborhood improvements and legal assistance for residents facing eviction. Dallas police argued that the cameras help officers identify vehicles, develop leads, and solve crimes.

A separate pause in state funding will shut down 321 Flock cameras in Dallas on Sept. 15. Police said more than 300 other cameras will remain in operation.

Opponents have raised concerns about data sharing, possible misuse, and lack of the public’s trust. The council is expected to make its final decision on the program as part of the city budget within two weeks.

Salame Named San Antonio Police Chief

San Antonio City Manager Erik Walsh selected Jesse Salame to permanently lead the San Antonio Police Department following a nationwide search that drew more than 30 applicants.

Salame has served as acting chief since July and has spent 27 years with the department. He graduated from the police academy in 1999, spent a decade as a detective, and was promoted to deputy chief in 2022.

He succeeds William McManus, the longest-serving police chief in San Antonio history.

Salame said his priorities include promoting public safety, keeping violent crime down, and strengthening community trust. The City Council is scheduled to confirm his appointment Sept. 10.

Thunderclap Triggers Magnolia School Lockdowns

Several Magnolia ISD schools were placed on lockdown Thursday after a teacher at Willie E. Williams Elementary mistook a clap of thunder for a gunshot.

The teacher was in an interior room and did not know a storm was moving into the area, district officials said. After hearing the loud noise around 12:45 p.m., the teacher called 911.

The Montgomery County Precinct 5 Constable’s Office and Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office responded, while several district schools entered precautionary lockdowns.

Magnolia Mayor Chris Blair called the incident a false alarm and thanked the first responders who arrived within minutes and were prepared to protect students.
