Friday Storms Knock Out Triad Power

Severe thunderstorms swept the Piedmont Triad on Friday evening, downing trees and cutting power to more than 23,000 Duke Energy customers in Guilford County.

The National Weather Service warned of 60 mph gusts and half-dollar-size hail as the line pushed southeast through Greensboro, McLeansville, and Pleasant Garden. Warnings and watches covered much of the Triad into the evening.

Greensboro police told drivers to treat any cable in the roadway as electrified and warned that the worst of the downed trees and lines sat on the city's outskirts and out in the county.

The storms also put Friday night football on hold, with games across the Triad delayed or suspended as lightning moved through. Duke Energy crews worked overnight to restore service.

Greensboro Leaders Push Back on Listing

Greensboro leaders pushed back Thursday on the city's placement on the state's financial watch list, calling the shortfall fixable and pointing to nearly $100 million in reserves.

Mayor Marikay Abuzuaiter called an emergency council meeting after members learned of the listing in an email from the Local Government Commission. She said she wanted residents to hear it directly from the city.

The commission flagged Greensboro because its fund balance ended fiscal 2025 at 22.9% of operating spending, below the 25% the city agreed to reach, and it wants that gap closed before 2030.

Commission staff told the city the listing doesn't mean insolvency or a cash emergency. Abuzuaiter said the LGC confirmed Greensboro is "an overall financially healthy city".

City Manager Nathaniel "Trey" Davis said the money isn't missing and is bringing in outside reviewers. City leaders meet state officials in the coming weeks.

State Counts 284 Rabies Exposures

State health officials have counted 284 people exposed to rabies by baby goats from a mobile petting zoo in Iredell County.

Health departments have recommended post-exposure shots for 213 of them as of Sept. 2, and others have been evaluated at hospitals and doctors' offices. The state says it has enough treatment on hand.

More than 320 people statewide have started the shots since Aug. 28, though that count covers all rabies exposures, not just the petting zoo.

The exposure window runs July 28 through Aug. 27, covering Farm Adventures in Harmony and events in Statesville, Lexington, Mocksville, and private gatherings in Watauga, Burke, Mecklenburg, and Durham counties.

The goats most likely caught the virus from a skunk that got into their pen in late July. Four were euthanized.
