Happy Labor Day! On this day in 1936, legendary American singer and songwriter Charles Hardin Holley, better known as Buddy Holly, was born in Lubbock. A contract error led to the spelling change from Holley to Holly, a name that would soon become iconic in rock ‘n’ roll history.

MAGA PAC Launches $10M Senate Blitz

MAGA Inc., a super PAC aligned with President Trump, will spend at least $10 million in Texas’ U.S. Senate race, marking its first major expenditure of the 2026 midterm cycle.

Federal filings show $5 million is earmarked for digital and connected-TV ads supporting Republican nominee Ken Paxton, with another $5 million funding ads opposing Democrat nominee James Talarico.

The ads argue that Talarico supports higher taxes and present Paxton’s proposals as tax relief. Talarico’s campaign disputed that portrayal, pointing to his support for property-tax reductions. The spending comes as recent polling shows a competitive race.

Elmore Gets 20 Years in ‘Killing Fields’ Case

A Galveston County jury imposed the maximum sentence of 20 years in prison Thursday on James Dolphs Elmore Jr., 61, following his manslaughter conviction in the 1984 death of 16-year-old Laura Miller.

Prosecutors said Elmore prepared a vial of cocaine that Clyde Hedrick administered to Miller, causing her fatal overdose. Elmore’s defense maintained that he was not involved. Hedrick, whom authorities suspected in several deaths, died by suicide before prosecutors could present their case against him to a grand jury.

Miller’s body was found in 1986 in a League City field where four young women were discovered between 1984 and 1991. Her father, Tim Miller, later founded Texas EquuSearch, a nonprofit that searches for missing people.

The bodies of more than 30 girls and young women have been found along the Interstate 45 corridor southeast of Houston, an area known as the “Texas Killing Fields.” Most of the deaths remain unsolved.
