Good morning! On this day in 1774, the first session of the Continental Congress met at Carpenter’s Hall in Philadelphia. Fifty-six delegates from all the colonies, except for Georgia, drafted a declaration of rights and grievances, and elected Peyton Randolph from Virginia as the first president of Congress. The first big Saturday of the new college football season is upon us, bringing all the fall traditions we love: tailgate parties, amazing plays, and of course, courtroom battles over who's eligible to play and for whom. Reading the sports page can feel like a business-law class these days, but we'd rather focus on the action on the field. We kick off this season's coverage in our top story below. Alzheimer's disease can now be detected with a simple blood test, and for the first time, two new drugs can actually slow its progression. On The Flyover Podcast, Amy counts down the five numbers behind the biggest shift in Alzheimer's care in a generation, including one that could catch the disease before symptoms even start. Tune in here!
We're always interested in products that take an everyday task and simply make it easier. That's what caught our attention about today's sponsor, the Sonic Glow Brush. If you've ever wished brushing your teeth was quicker without sacrificing a thorough clean, this is worth a look.

Judge Declares Mistrial in Clancy Case
A judge declared a mistrial Friday in the sensational Lindsay Clancy murder trial after jurors remained deadlocked through 36 hours of deliberations. Clancy is accused of strangling her three children in their Duxbury, Massachusetts home in 2023. Clancy’s attorney argued that a lone holdout juror refused to follow the law on reasonable doubt and appealed immediately to Massachusetts' highest court, seeking an order to investigate and potentially remove him from the panel. The appeal was denied. Clancy's defense conceded she killed the children but argued postpartum psychosis left her not criminally responsible. She remains held without bail at a state psychiatric facility while prosecutors decide whether to retry the case. |
Jobs Reports Blows Past Forecasts
The U.S. economy added 162,000 jobs in August, more than doubling economists' forecasts and delivering the strongest month of hiring since March. The unemployment rate held steady at 4.1%. Food services led the gains with 59,000 new positions, followed by public education at 42,000. The Labor Department also revised July's initially negative figures into positive territory. The stronger-than-expected report complicates the Federal Reserve's decision ahead of its Sept. 15-16 meeting, where officials are weighing whether to raise rates to combat persistent inflation. |
College Football Set for Kickoff
College football’s first full Saturday slate has arrived, with No. 2 Oregon hosting Boise State this afternoon before Clemson and No. 11 LSU take center stage tonight in Baton Rouge.
ESPN’s College GameDay will be live from LSU’s campus for the program’s 500th road show as Lane Kiffin prepares to make his LSU coaching debut after a tumultuous offseason.
On Thursday, the Southeastern Conference filed a federal lawsuit against LSU and Kiffin over the program’s push to roster former NFL players. Later that day, a Louisiana judge separately granted a preliminary injunction allowing dozens of athletes, including former pros recruited by LSU, to pursue another season of eligibility.
Nationally, Ohio State opens the season at No. 1, with Oregon, Georgia, Notre Dame, and Texas rounding out the top five. Defending national champion Indiana ranks No. 6, followed by reigning runner-up Miami at No. 7. |
