Happy Labor Day! On this day in 1970, Donald Boyles set a record for the highest parachute jump from a bridge by leaping off the 956-foot Royal Gorge Bridge outside Cañon City.

Bear Swipes at Man in Backyard

A bear swiped at a person napping in a backyard patio chair in Steamboat Springs on Thursday, leaving a scraped knee, Colorado Parks and Wildlife said.

The victim noticed the animal approaching and stayed motionless as it huffed and popped its jaw. A neighbor then drove the bear off with bear spray.

The injuries were minor, and the person did not seek professional treatment. CPW called it the eighth bear attack reported in Colorado this year.

Bears have entered hyperphagia, a stretch of heavy feeding before hibernation, and drought has thinned natural food. CPW logged 8,672 bear reports through Aug. 31.

Heat, Rain, Packed Roads for Labor Day

The holiday weekend heat holds through today, with highs again in the low 90s around metro Denver and more cloud cover than the past few days.

Today carries the best rain chance of the stretch, with showers and storms favoring areas south and east of Denver.

Temperatures dip Tuesday and Wednesday into the mid to upper 80s, though that's still above normal for early September.

Amid the holiday travel rush, the statewide average gas price hit $4.26 a gallon, up from $3.24 a year ago. AAA expects I-70 mountain traffic to be heaviest today and Tuesday.
