Good Morning! On this day in 2010, an improperly extinguished fire pit sparked the Fourmile Canyon Fire west of Boulder on Labor Day. It burned 6,181 acres and destroyed 169 homes, a state record for property loss at the time.

Student ICE Walkout Turns Violent

A statewide student walkout over federal immigration enforcement drew hundreds to Denver's La Alma-Lincoln Park on Friday, where police reported five assaults and three hospitalizations.

Officers said they contacted or identified several suspects, and those investigations continue. Two people were cited for graffiti, and no one was arrested.

Organizers with the Colorado Youth Coalition said students from more than 200 high schools joined, from Brush to Grand Junction. More than 100 walked out of Grand Junction High School at the 8 a.m. bell.

The Denver gathering stayed peaceful until a handful of counterprotesters drew a reaction. Students threw water on a man carrying an "I love ICE" sign, and one woman was punched in the face.

Police told the crowd its planned street march was an unlawful assembly. State Sen. Julie Gonzales, a Denver Democrat, and other organizers steered students onto the sidewalks.

Wright Defends Springs Coal Plant

U.S. Secretary of Energy Chris Wright toured the Ray D. Nixon Power Plant outside Colorado Springs on Friday and argued against the state's timeline for closing it.

Republican U.S. Reps. Jeff Crank and Gabe Evans joined the tour. Crank said Colorado Springs Utilities customers are opening "$420 utility bills," and Evans cited a state study he said shows the policies will cost residents $61 billion more.

Wright argued coal and natural gas keep the grid reliable and rates lower.

The utility answered minutes later with spokeswoman Amy Trinidad saying Colorado Springs Utilities values its partnership with state policymakers and is committed to complying with state law.

Nixon is El Paso County's last coal-fired plant. A bill signed in May pushed its retirement from the end of 2029 to the end of 2032, after negotiations involving the governor's office and environmental groups.

CBI Review Backs Trussell Findings

The Colorado Bureau of Investigation finished an independent review of CU Boulder freshman Megan Trussell's death and found the original Boulder County investigation reasonable and supported by the evidence.

Reviewers found no evidence of homicide or assault and no unfinished step that would change the finding of suicide. Independent medical experts backed the coroner's conclusions.

The seven-month review covered digital evidence, campus access records, body-camera footage and forensic files, and went before CBI's Cold Case Review Team in July.

Trussell's family requested the review and rejected its findings, saying in a statement that the meeting "left us with more questions than answers." They are still seeking the full autopsy report.

CBI Director Armando Saldate III said no administrative review can undo the family's loss, but that the process ensured every piece of evidence was examined. It is the first review of its kind under a 2022 state law.

➤ Denver: A district judge ruled Friday that Libertarian Sean Vadney, 26, will appear on the November ballot for secretary of state after the party's original nominee withdrew one day past the deadline for replacements. (See Details)

➤ Douglas County: The sheriff's office and Castle Rock Police used a Grappler Police Bumper, a device that latches onto a fleeing car's rear wheel, to end a pursuit of a robbery suspect. One suspect ran on foot and was caught. Both were arrested. (See Video)
