Florida Expands December Bear Hunt

Florida will offer up to 215 bear hunting permits this December, up from 172 last year. The hunt runs Dec. 5-27 in four regions. Last year's hunt, the first since 2015, ended with 52 bears killed over 23 days.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission opens bidding Sept. 11 at $5 an entry for 193 of them. The other 22 go to landowners with at least 5,000 contiguous acres and five documented bears.

Hunt opponents held that count down by entering the drawing and letting permits go unused; 14,996 people filed 163,459 applications last year. Officials warned the tactic would push permit numbers higher.

Supporters say hunting helps manage bears that increasingly run into people and cite the hunting and fishing rights voters added to the state Constitution in 2024. Opponents doubt it reduces those encounters and favor nonlethal options.

Bradenton Man Extradited from Hungary

A Bradenton man who fled to Hungary in 2022 to avoid arrest on a child exploitation charge is back in Florida, police said Monday.

Csaba Nemeth, 48, a dual U.S. and Hungarian citizen, is charged with possessing child sexual abuse material. Investigators counted more than 10 files, upgrading the charge to a second-degree felony.

A tip sent detectives to Nemeth's home in September 2022, where they seized devices. He was gone by the time they had an arrest warrant. An FBI task force tracked him to Hungary, where a federal warrant charged him with unlawful flight to avoid prosecution.

Agents escorted Nemeth back to the Manatee County Jail on Friday, where he's held on a $650,000 bond. Police say he's the first Hungarian citizen allowed to be extradited to the United States in more than 25 years.

Florida Sweeps Top Retirement Spots

Orlando, Miami, and Tampa swept the top three spots in WalletHub's 2026 ranking of the best U.S. cities to retire.

Orlando has held first place three years running, ranking second for affordability among the more than 180 cities studied and fourth for geriatric hospitals.

Miami leads the country in volunteer opportunities for older adults, art galleries, and fishing spots per capita. Tampa ranked third for low taxes, 19th-lowest property crime rate, and 9th-most bingo halls per person.

All three ride on Florida's lack of income, estate, and inheritance taxes. "The best cities for retired people are those that minimize taxes and expenses," WalletHub analyst Chip Lupo said.

➤ Alachua County: An 11-year-old boy was arrested after deputies say he grabbed a semi-automatic handgun at a neighborhood playground, walked to a nearby window, and knocked on it with the gun while threatening to shoot two children inside. (See Details)

➤ Venice: A 43-year-old man is charged with cutting down an oak at Patriots Park, home of a 9/11 memorial, after police say a friend of someone killed in an Aug. 17 crash paid him. Replacing the tree could cost $50,000. (See Details)

➤ Gainesville: A 51-year-old man jumped to his death from the top of the Swamp into the concourse of Ben Hill Griffin Stadium. Officials believe he was homeless and say no one else was at the University of Florida stadium. (More)

➤ Orlando: Nearly 900 pounds of marijuana bound for Orlando was seized in Georgia, part of an 1,800-pound shipment from Sacramento intercepted by the Butts County Sheriff's Office. No arrests have been announced. (See Photo)
