18 Haitian Suspects Reach Miami

Eighteen suspects arrested in the July 2021 assassination of Haitian President Jovenel Moïse were flown to Florida on Sunday aboard a U.S. military plane to face federal charges.

The group includes 17 Colombian soldiers and Joseph Badio, a former Haitian justice ministry employee. The Colombians have testified they were beaten, threatened with death, and forced to sign documents in a language they didn't understand.

Prosecutors say Florida business owners used fraudulent COVID relief loan money to buy weapons and tactical gear and to hire the Colombian mercenaries. The charges include conspiracy to kill or kidnap abroad and wire fraud.

Thirty people have been indicted. A Miami jury convicted four men in May, at least five others have pleaded guilty and are serving life, and U.S. Attorney Jason Reding Quiñones said prosecutors are "not finished."

Starbucks Settles Florida DEI Lawsuit

Starbucks will pay Florida $1 million and stop using race- and sex-based goals, quotas, and preferences in hiring at every location in the country under a settlement ending the state's civil rights lawsuit.

The lawsuit, filed in December in Highlands County, accused the chain of running race-based quotas at its 934 Florida shops and tying executive pay to progress on diversity targets. It named no single incident, pointing instead to five years of company practices.

"Every Floridian deserves to be hired, promoted, and compensated based on merit, qualifications, and character—not race or sex," Attorney General James Uthmeier said. The deal also bars Starbucks from joining groups that require members to add racial diversity to their boards.

Starbucks denied breaking the law and admitted no wrongdoing, but agreed to certify its compliance every year for four years. Chief legal officer Pilar Ramos said the company will continue to offer "great jobs and career opportunities" to the workers who wear the green apron.

Fishing Charter Hauls in Military Drone

A Pensacola fishing charter pulled a nearly 10-foot U.S. military drone out of the Gulf on Saturday during a six-hour trip.

Capt. Daniel Arsenault spotted the object from a distance and checked it out. He pulled a good-sized mahi-mahi from underneath it, and his passengers helped him haul the drone aboard.

The delta-wing aircraft resembles an FLM-136, a target drone the military reverse-engineered from Iran's Shahed-136 attack drone for testing. Photos show it missing its engine, propeller, and nose cone, common damage after a water impact.

Arsenault posted a photo of the haul on Facebook: "If anyone is looking for their drone please call Hot Spots!" Hours later, he added, "The black SUVs came and got their drone, all is good!"

Eglin Air Force Base said a LUCAS drone hit the water on Sept. 17 during routine testing on its range and that it has been recovered.
