Counties Face $52 Million SNAP Cost

North Carolina’s 100 counties face $52 million in additional costs to administer SNAP, the federal food-assistance program, beginning Oct. 1.

The 2025 federal budget law cut federal funding for SNAP administrative costs from 50% to 25%, leaving North Carolina to cover the rest. Counties, which run local eligibility offices, will pay about $52 million of that this fiscal year and the state about $12 million.

Dare County budgeted $237,000 this fiscal year toward $595,388 in added costs over two years. Social Services Director Chuck Lycett said the county must find another $358,388 for fiscal 2028.

Starting Oct. 1, 2027, North Carolina could owe an estimated $150 million toward SNAP benefits because of its 7.36% error rate, a cost the July state budget shifts to counties by withholding sales tax revenue.

Lucama Firm Recalls Uninspected Meat

Star Meat Delivery, a Lucama company, is recalling 167,639 pounds of raw pork, beef, and goat products made without inspection.

The recalled bulk packages bear a false USDA mark with the establishment number “EST. 1363,” which is not assigned to a federally inspected plant. Federal inspectors discovered the issue during routine surveillance.

The products were vacuum-sealed, packed in cardboard boxes, and shipped to Georgia distributor A&D Foods for distribution to retailers and restaurants nationwide. They were produced on various dates before Sept. 22.

No illnesses have been reported, but federal officials said the products are unsafe to eat and should be discarded or returned.

Nor’easter Takes Aim at Outer Banks

A nor’easter off the North Carolina coast is expected to affect N.C. 12 south of the Marc Basnight Bridge through Friday, with ocean overwash likely on Hatteras and Ocracoke islands.

NCDOT said high-tide travel could become especially difficult Thursday night and Friday morning, when temporary closures are possible. Crews spent Tuesday strengthening protective dunes on Pea, Hatteras, and Ocracoke islands.

Forecasters issued a coastal flood warning from Oregon Inlet to Ocracoke, with gusts approaching 50 mph, seas of 12 to 15 feet immediately offshore, and isolated power outages possible.

The National Park Service advised visitors to avoid northern Rodanthe, where oceanfront houses remain exposed to the surf, and warned of dangerous rip currents through Saturday.
