Virginia Borrowers Get Relief, Student Search, Charlottesville Attraction Honored

Virginia Secures $19M Auto Loan Settlement

Virginia borrowers are expected to receive more than $19 million in restitution and debt relief through a multistate settlement with subprime auto lender Credit Acceptance Corp.

Virginia’s share includes more than $2 million in restitution and over $17 million in debt relief. Nationwide, the agreement totals roughly $710 million, including $634 million in forgiven debt for more than 55,000 borrowers.

State officials alleged that Credit Acceptance approved some loans it knew borrowers could not afford and that associated dealerships added service contracts or guaranteed asset protection coverage without adequately informing customers. The company denied wrongdoing.

The agreement requires stronger disclosures, increased dealership oversight, and additional protections for borrowers at high risk of default. It takes effect Nov. 2, and eligible consumers will be notified.

Search Underway for Missing Howard Student

Prince George’s County police are searching for Esube “Izzy” Wondwossen, a 22-year-old Howard University senior who has been missing since Tuesday.

Her father said he dropped her off at Maryland’s Branch Avenue Metro Station around 7 a.m. for what appeared to be her normal commute. Police said she was subsequently seen leaving Pentagon Metro Station in Arlington, and her sister reported that Wondwossen was seen in Alexandria around 8:25 a.m.

Wondwossen was wearing a black zip-up hoodie, black leggings, Crocs, and a headband, and she was carrying a Michael Kors tote bag. She is 5 feet 1 inch tall, weighs approximately 110 pounds, and has a mole above her left eyebrow.

Her family said it is unlike her to remain away without contacting them and noted that location tracking on her phone appeared to have been turned off. Anyone with information is asked to contact Prince George’s County police.
