Georgia has recorded its first West Nile virus death of 2026, the state Department of Public Health announced Wednesday.

No information about the incident has been released, including its timing, location or the identity of the person.

As of Sept. 15, there have been eight human cases reported across the state in 2026. In 2025, Georgia recorded 18 human cases, including three deaths from the virus.

With mosquito season usually continuing into next month, health officials are advising Georgians to take steps to avoid mosquito bites, including applying EPA-registered insect repellents and wearing light-colored, loose-fitting, and long clothing.

Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport spilled roughly 33,000 gallons of sewage into a wooded area near Sullivan Creek on Wednesday.

The spill took place at a sewer lift station. The lift returned to normal operations roughly 90 minutes later, crews spread a neutralizing agent on the ground, and flights were not disrupted. An investigation into the cause is ongoing.

Following the incident, low oxygen levels and 200 to 300 dead fish were discovered at Sullivan Creek, according to the Flint Riverkeeper.

Sullivan Creek feeds the Flint River, which supplies drinking water to over 400,000 people in Clayton, Coweta, Fayette, Pike, and Spalding counties.

Earlier this year, the Flint Riverkeeper and Southern Environmental Law Center announced plans to sue the City of Atlanta and the airport over ongoing pollution in the Flint River.

The Atlanta Braves clinched a playoff spot Friday night with a 6-2 win over the Astros in Houston, their eighth trip to the postseason in nine years.

Their 90th win locked up at least a National League wild-card spot, and Philadelphia's 6-3 loss to the Mets pushed Atlanta's lead in the NL East to five games with eight to play. The Braves could claim the division title as early as Sunday.

Last year, the team missed the playoffs for the first time since 2017.

The Braves play in Houston again tonight and close the series Sunday, then come home to face Cincinnati on Tuesday for their last three games at Truist Park before finishing the season in Miami.
