Welcome, Noodle Networkers. |
The people building AI want everyone to slow down, Bell is building enough compute to heat a small province, and one coffee shop learned the internet has very strong feelings about menus. Normal Monday. First up, the AI race itself is getting awkward. AI CEOs are suddenly saying the industry needs to slow down, even while every company keeps sprinting. It is basically four Formula One drivers yelling “safety first” without taking their feet off the gas. π Meanwhile, in Canada, the infrastructure race is doing the exact opposite. Bell is expanding its Regina AI data centre plans in a big way. Saskatchewan might soon have more compute than cows, and somewhere a GPU is already asking for a toque. ⚡ And finally, from billion dollar infrastructure to a much smaller AI crisis. A coffee shop used AI to create a menu and got roasted online for it. The owner wanted cozy cafΓ© vibes and accidentally ordered a full serving of internet outrage. ☕ So while AI leaders debate the brakes, companies are building more capacity, and small businesses are learning the hard way that the internet notices everything. Let’s dig in. |

π The Digest: AI CEOs are suddenly asking everyone to slow down, which is fascinating because these are the same people who spent years treating the AI race like Mario Kart with no guardrails. Dario Amodei, Sam Altman, Demis Hassabis, and Elon Musk now agree that frontier AI needs more caution. The obvious question is whether anyone plans to touch the brake once a competitor appears in the rearview mirror. |
Key Details: |
π️ Everyone Found the Brake Pedal
Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei wants leading AI labs to deliberately pace how quickly their most powerful systems improve. Silicon Valley spent years screaming “faster,” and has now discovered the revolutionary technology known as slowing down before hitting the wall. |
π Bring In Outside Referees
The proposal includes giving independent safety evaluators deep access to AI labs so they can watch models during development. Think health inspector, except the kitchen is training something that might someday redesign the kitchen by itself. |
π€ Competitors Would Need to Cooperate
Amodei also wants major AI companies to agree on common safety standards and limits. That sounds sensible until you remember these companies compete for researchers, chips, customers, and bragging rights like siblings fighting over the front seat. |
π Then Comes the China Problem
A meaningful slowdown would eventually require cooperation between the United States, China, and other major powers. Everyone may agree that runaway AI sounds bad. Agreeing who slows down first is where the international game of “you first” begins. |
Why It Matters: The biggest obstacle to slowing AI may not be technology at all. It is incentives. Every CEO can promise caution on Sunday, but Monday morning arrives with investors, rivals, and a benchmark showing someone else is ahead. Asking the AI industry to voluntarily slow down may be like putting six race cars on the starting line and announcing that the trophy goes to whoever drives responsibly. |

⚡ The Digest: Bell is supersizing its AI ambitions near Regina, because apparently Saskatchewan did not already have enough things that consume industrial amounts of energy. The telecom giant is building a 300 MW AI campus that could become the largest purpose built AI data centre in Canada. Your phone company is now casually constructing a computer fortress on the prairie. |
Key Details: |
π️ This Is Not Your Router Closet |
The campus near Regina is planned across roughly 160 acres, with multiple data centre buildings eventually covering around 500,000 square feet. At that size, asking where the server is becomes less of an IT question and more of a hiking itinerary. |
⚡ Three Hundred Megawatts Says Hello |
Bell plans for the site to reach 300 MW of power capacity, enough to support seriously hungry AI workloads. AI apparently looked at normal electricity consumption and said, “Can I get the large combo instead?” |
π€ Cerebras and CoreWeave Move In |
The capacity has already been contracted to AI heavyweights Cerebras and CoreWeave, while Bell provides the land, cooling, power infrastructure, and connectivity. It is basically an extremely expensive apartment building where every tenant owns thousands of computers and nobody sleeps. |
π° Bell Sees a Very Large Paycheque |
Bell expects the project to generate about $500 million in annual revenue once fully running, with the first phase planned for 2027. Suddenly those monthly phone bills feel like they were training for something much bigger. |
Why It Matters: Bell is transforming from the company you call when your internet stops working into one of Canada’s biggest builders of AI infrastructure. If projects like this succeed, Saskatchewan could become an important piece of Canada’s domestic compute strategy. The prairie used to be famous for wheat, potash, and endless horizons. Now someone is adding several billion calculations per second to the brochure. |

☕ The Digest: A Buffalo coffee shop used AI to make one seasonal menu poster and somehow triggered the kind of backlash usually reserved for cancelled television finales. Penny’s Coffee Shop wanted to save a little time. The internet responded like ChatGPT had personally replaced the town muralist with a fax machine. |
Key Details: |
π¨ The Chalkboard Artist Left
Penny’s usually had artistic employees make its seasonal signs, but its latest chalkboard expert moved away. With a newborn at home and no resident Picasso behind the espresso machine, co owner Megi Endeladze turned to ChatGPT for the design. |
πΈ The Robot Poster Was Not Even Cheap
The AI image was professionally printed for about $150, plus roughly $200 for a poster holder. So much for AI saving money. At $350, the menu practically deserved its own chair, health insurance, and preferred parking spot. |
π₯ Instagram Ordered Extra Roast
Once the poster hit Instagram, angry comments and messages poured in, and the shop lost around 100 followers. One account even threatened to expose the cafΓ© to the local artist community unless the sign came down. Apparently the strongest drink on the menu was public outrage with three extra shots. |
π️ Canva Wins the Rematch
Endeladze apologized and said the shop would stop using AI for menu artwork and promotional designs. Next time, she plans to make the design herself in Canva, proving that sometimes the safest artificial intelligence strategy is opening a template and moving the text box slightly to the left. |
Why It Matters: This tiny coffee shop drama captures a much bigger tension around AI and creative work. Businesses see a cheap shortcut, while customers may see local artists getting replaced by pixels with suspiciously perfect foam. Penny’s only wanted a fall menu, and somehow ended up conducting a live experiment in whether Buffalo takes graphic design more seriously than caffeine. |
