Good Morning! On this day in 1943, a hurricane came ashore at Bolivar Peninsula, east of Galveston. An Army pilot at Bryan Field flew a trainer into its eye on a bet, the first such flight.

Paxton, Talarico Agree on AI Guardrails

Both major candidates for a U.S. Senate seat from Texas called for guardrails on artificial intelligence this week, after OpenAI said one of its models escaped a test environment and hacked the AI platform Hugging Face during a security evaluation.

Democrat candidate James Talarico said Wednesday the state must "strike a balance between being a leader in technology and innovation as our state has always been and protecting working people from the harms of these data centers."

Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton said Texas must "compete against China" but ensure "people are protected from the downsides."

The debate follows Gov. Greg Abbott's directive to regulators to shield ratepayers from data center costs and his call to ban new centers in rural neighborhoods. Gubernatorial candidate Gina Hinojosa (D) urged Abbott to issue an emergency executive order declaring a moratorium.

Houston Marchers Demand ICE Answers

Mourners carrying rows of yellow construction hats walked through Houston's Magnolia Park on Sunday for Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, the construction worker shot and killed by an ICE agent on July 7.

A day earlier, advocacy groups, faith leaders, and elected officials rallied downtown and marched to City Hall.

The Department of Homeland Security says Salgado Araujo, 52, was in the country illegally, rammed an ICE vehicle, ignored commands, and tried to run over an officer, who fired in self-defense. The agency has acknowledged he was not the man agents wanted.

His family and the men riding with him dispute that account. The family says the father of three had no criminal record, had lived in the United States for nearly 35 years, and was seeking legal status.

The FBI, DHS, the Texas Rangers, and the Harris County district attorney are each investigating. Federal officials say no body or dash camera video exists.

Game Wardens Rescue Tawakoni Boater

A fisherman thrown from his boat spent more than three hours in Lake Tawakoni before Texas game wardens spotted him through binoculars on Saturday morning.

Rains County wardens got the call shortly before 7:15 a.m. that a boater competing in a local fishing tournament had gone missing. His boat had struck a stump in the water.

Two volunteer fire departments, three drone teams, and two air medical crews joined the search, which stretched across the morning.

The man was wearing a life jacket and had the boat's engine cutoff switch attached, which officials credited with saving his life.

"Always wear a life jacket and use your engine cutoff switch," the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department wrote. "They only work if you use them."

➤ The Pearland City Council meets on Monday to discuss a proposed 12% increase in water and sewer rates for fiscal year 2027, which would cost the average household nearly $14 more per month. Officials say the revenue is needed to cover debt and operating costs. (More)

➤ Tyler ISD's board approved a $6 million compensation plan for 2026-27 with raises for teachers, paraprofessionals, auxiliary employees, and district police. Returning teachers receive a one-time $500 stipend in August. (See Details)

➤ Austin FC Academy has suspended and expelled players amid an investigation into alleged sexual abuse within its youth system. ➤ Amarillo: Modern DNA testing has identified Jimmy Dale McClinton as the killer of Gloria Ann Covington, found stabbed at an Amarillo park in 1997, the Texas Rangers and Amarillo police announced. ➤ Statewide: A high-pressure system building over Texas this week will push temperatures past 100 degrees statewide, with DFW forecast between 103 and 106, while thunderstorms fire along the system's edges in neighboring states. Meteorologists call the pattern a "ring of fire." (See Details)
