Denver hit 101 degrees on Saturday, breaking a heat record for July 25 that had stood since 1963, and Sunday reached 102 to 103 degrees.

Boulder and Fort Collins also broke daily heat records on Saturday, hitting 100 and 101 degrees, respectively, both eclipsing marks set in 2023.

A Heat Advisory covered much of the Front Range and eastern plains through Sunday, and Denver saw its first back-to-back 100-degree days since 2022.

Denver Zoo moved up its Sunday hours to 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. because of the forecasted extreme heat. Storm chances are expected to increase through midweek as temperatures gradually ease.

A speeding Chevrolet Tahoe rolled several times and ejected all five occupants on Weld County Road 80 Saturday evening.

Three victims, including recent Eaton High School graduates, died at the scene. The 20-year-old driver was airlifted in critical condition and another passenger suffered minor injuries.

The Eaton School District confirmed four recent graduates and another individual were involved, and said crisis counselors would be available at the high school Sunday for students and community members.

Authorities closed the road for about six hours to investigate. The coroner's office will release the victims' names once next of kin have been notified.

Article Icon 1Razorback Sucker No Longer Endangered

Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) announced the razorback sucker, a large native fish of the Colorado River Basin, has been downgraded from endangered to threatened under the Endangered Species Act.

CPW says the decision validates more than three decades of recovery work after the fish was first listed as endangered in 1991 due to habitat loss from dams and predation by non-native fish.

Officials say the species still faces challenges, especially during drought years, and will continue to need active management including flow management and restocking efforts.

Community programs, including a Palisade High School student-led hatchery that has released more than 1,500 fish, continue to support the recovery effort.
