Discipline Records Will Follow Students

Florida high school students' disciplinary records will follow them to college under a rule the State Board of Education adopted on Wednesday.

When a student enrolls at a postsecondary institution, the district must transfer verified reports of serious or recurrent behavior, including documented threats and concerning communications. The rule implements part of HB 757, the campus safety package lawmakers passed after the 2025 FSU shooting that killed two people.

Board Chair Ryan Petty, whose daughter was killed at Parkland, said sharing threat information "just makes sense." Board member Layla Collins backed the security goal but wants to revisit the rule so students aren't penalized "for a rough patch."

Reward Hits $16K in Panhandle Manhunt

The reward for murder suspect Isabelle Rose Johnson has grown to $16,000, nearly a month into a manhunt spanning Florida, Alabama, and Georgia.

Johnson, 38, is wanted in the death of 43-year-old Jason Coulthart, whose remains were found June 25 in a shallow grave in Freeport. A U.S. Marshals Task Force pledge boosted the previous $11,000.

The sheriff's office calls Johnson a "master manipulator" with six aliases, and deputies released new identifying details Thursday, including a scorpion tattoo down her left thigh. Five people face accessory charges for allegedly hiding her. "Justice is coming… Turn yourself in. Enough is enough," the office posted.

Broward Bus Cameras Start Watching

All of Broward County's roughly 1,300 school buses will carry AI-powered cameras this year to catch drivers who illegally pass stopped buses.

The district launched the BusPatrol program on Thursday in Oakland Park, citing 1,244 illegal passings last school year. Each bus gets at least eight cameras, including license plate readers that record while students board and exit.

A warning period runs through Sept. 9, then violations reviewed by district police bring a $225 citation. Of each fine, $140 goes to BusPatrol and $85 to schools. Superintendent Howard Hepburn said officers "will be doing their due diligence" on each infraction. BusPatrol says more than 90% of first-time violators never reoffend.
