10 Hurt in Tucson Shooting

Ten people were injured in a shooting around 2 a.m. Sunday in a busy entertainment district in downtown Tucson, including a fleeing suspect shot by police, authorities said.

The other nine people suffered gunshot wounds mostly to their arms or legs. Their conditions were not immediately available. The suspected gunman was taken to a local hospital in life-threatening condition.

According to police, the shooting started after a confrontation between two groups known to each other. Officers on patrol heard the gunfire and ran toward the scene, where they encountered a person fleeing. An officer shot the person after he refused orders to stop.

No additional information on a motive for the shooting was available. State and local political leaders issued statements in support of the victims, praising the officers' response, and decrying the violence.

Leaders to Defend Deportation Law

Republican legislative leaders and state Attorney General Kris Mayes are preparing to defend a voter-approved 2024 law that would let state judges issue deportation orders and local police arrest migrants.

The Florence Immigrant and Refugee Rights Project and the ACLU sued over Proposition 314, arguing that the law violates the U.S. Constitution's Supremacy Clause, which places federal law above state law.

Republican Senate President Warren Petersen and House Speaker Steve Montenegro won permission to intervene, citing Mayes' past criticism of the law and skepticism that her office would fully defend the state.

A court hearing in the case is set for Friday.

Naked Man Arrested in Train Stunt

A Quartzsite man was arrested in Colorado after allegedly climbing atop a moving Union Pacific locomotive and riding it in the nude, stunning onlookers.

Authorities said Daniel Ray Ballance of Quartzsite broke a window to enter the locomotive before climbing onto its roof while the train was moving through northeastern Colorado.

Railroad personnel alerted deputies, who coordinated to intercept the train and take him into custody, the Sedgwick County, Colorado, Sheriff's Office said in a statement.

"For those of you who had the unfortunate experience of seeing this gentleman surfing naked on top of a moving locomotive yesterday, I want you to know that he was arrested on felony and misdemeanor charges," the sheriff's office posted on social media.
