Rocket Maker Adds Space Coast Jobs

Relativity Space is bringing thousands of new jobs to Brevard County as it scales up production of its reusable Terran R rocket.

Space Florida, the state's aerospace agency, announced the expansion this week. The rocket maker is eligible for up to $134 million from the Florida Department of Transportation's Spaceport Improvement Program to build new production and test infrastructure across from Kennedy Space Center and the Cape Canaveral Space Force Station.

The 284-foot Terran R is set to launch later this year from Launch Complex 16. "Expanding our capacity in Florida enables our ability to scale the Terran R program to support commercial, scientific, and national security missions," Relativity Space Executive Chairman and CEO Eric Schmidt said in a statement.

The announcement adds to a launch boom already reshaping the Space Coast, where NASA, SpaceX, and a growing roster of commercial space companies are competing for workers and pad space.

Tampa Council Blocks Rays Land Vote

Tampa City Council voted 4-3 Thursday to block a land-use amendment the Tampa Bay Rays need to advance their proposed $2.3 billion stadium and mixed-use district.

The vote blocks the land-use change from reaching the state for review, though it doesn't reject the ballpark, its financing, or a master plan. Council member Lynn Hurtak, who led the opposition, called sending it to the state "a waste of time" since she planned to vote no regardless.

Mayor Jane Castor, who supports the project, has accused some council members of trying to kill the deal before negotiations are complete. The council separately shelved a vote on using $100 million in redevelopment financing for the project.

The stadium and surrounding district would rise on Hillsborough College's Dale Mabry campus in Tampa's Drew Park neighborhood, across from Raymond James Stadium. The team and city now return to negotiations without that groundwork in place.

Special Prosecutor Urges Mayor's Impeachment

A special prosecutor has found "clear probable cause" to impeach Kissimmee Mayor Jackie Espinosa over ethics violations tied to $50,000 in pandemic-era relief grants that went to businesses connected to her.

Special Prosecutor Mayanne Downs wrote in her 13-page report that "public office is a trust, not a trough," and that the Boost 2.0 program was meant to help small businesses survive the pandemic, not enrich the official who controlled it. She also recommended referring the matter to the Florida Commission on Ethics and state law enforcement.

Espinosa has said she won't comment further "out of respect for the process." The City Commission will now coordinate with Downs on next steps.

One of two residents whose complaints triggered the investigation, said she has no regrets: "I don't think it's fair that you take money from people, especially from the city people, and just do whatever you choose to do with it."
