Election Wraps in Record Time

Maricopa County tabulated more than 99% of the ballots cast in Tuesday's primary by Wednesday night, fulfilling a pledge by new county recorder Justin Heap for timely results.

"We delivered the fast, accurate, and transparent results we promised Maricopa County voters," Heap posted, noting also that the final batch of early ballots was verified within hours of his office getting them.

Heap and other county leaders praised overnight work by elections staff.

They also credited the addition of a speedier option to verify voter signatures at vote centers, which sharply cut the number needing verification after polls closed.

Feely and Shah Share NFL Past

Former NFL kicker Jay Feely, fresh off winning the Republican primary in the state's 1st Congressional District, already knows the Democrat he will face in November.

Feely and opponent Dr. Amish Shah crossed paths years ago with the New York Jets, where Shah was a team doctor while Feely handled the kicking duties.

Feely played for six NFL teams, including the Arizona Cardinals. Shah, as a member of the Jets medical staff, oversaw the team's airway management.

The 1st District is one of the most competitive in the country. Two years ago, Shah narrowly lost to U.S. Rep. David Schweikert, who chose not to seek another term and instead ran for governor.

$4.25 Gas Lures Californians

Rising fuel prices are drawing California "gas tourists" across the state line into Yuma, where a fill-up isn't cheap by U.S. norms but is much less costly than in their home state.

Californians near the state line are making the drive specifically to buy on the Arizona side, where Yuma's average price on Friday was $4.25 per gallon compared to California's statewide average of $5.57.

Prices are on the rise in both states and the rest of the country, with Arizona's average up about 25 cents over the past week. The U.S. average price was $4.09 as of Thursday.

Analysts tie the run-up partly to the Middle East conflict.
