Mudslides, Coinstar Burglar, and Lawn Mower Limits

Aspen Acres Fire Tops 100K Acres

The Aspen Acres Fire southwest of Pueblo—the seventh-largest fire in state history—has surpassed 100,000 acres, even as crews pushed containment to more than 60% over the weekend.

Rain and calmer winds let crews get more aggressive with containment lines, and new Hotshot crews were sent to the fire's southwestern boundary to protect the community of Rye.

The Pueblo County Sheriff's Office says it has identified a drone pilot who flew over the fire, temporarily grounding aircraft battling the blaze. Federal charges are expected.

Mudslides Flood Telluride Buildings

Mudslides triggered by a heavy Friday thunderstorm in Telluride sent water and debris into nearby buildings, leaving 3 to 4 feet of mud in the Palm Theater and about 6 inches of standing water in Telluride Intermediate School.

A resident also described 3 feet of mud in a nearby home. San Miguel County closed Tomboy Road, and Ouray County closed Camp Bird Road, due to unsafe conditions after the storm.

A second slide the next day dumped boulders, trees, and mud across Highway 145 near Keystone Hill, prompting an overnight closure while crews cleared the road.

The Town of Telluride is now offering sandbag materials to residents ahead of more expected storms, while noting more mudslides have occurred on the town's east side in past years.

Tarantula Holding Returns to Butterfly Pavilion

The Butterfly Pavilion in Westminster is bringing back hands-on tarantula encounters through a new exhibit called Behind the Web, letting visitors hold a tarantula named Goldie under staff supervision.

The pavilion had paused tarantula handling in September 2025 over animal-welfare concerns, and Goldie's holding time is now capped at 20 minutes a week, down from two hours.

Staff say the program is meant to help people get over arachnophobia by showing visitors that tarantulas aren't the monsters movies often portray.

The exhibit opens to the public July 25, costs $45 per person, and requires participants to be at least three years old, with anyone under 18 needing an accompanying adult.
