Good Morning! On this day in 1850, Dr. John Gorrie, a Florida physician, gave the first public demonstration of artificial ice using mechanical refrigeration, astonishing guests at a sweltering afternoon reception celebrating France’s Bastille Day. A California company just got the green light to launch a giant mirror into space, aiming to bounce sunlight back to Earth after dark. The pitch is longer daylight for solar farms and work sites. Not everyone's thrilled about it, though, and we've got the story below. Are you frustrated with a phone battery that never seems to last the day? You are not alone, and the fix usually is not a trip to the store or a few hundred dollars for a new device. A handful of settings buried in your phone are quietly draining power all day long, and most of them are switched on by default without you ever knowing. In today's episode of The Flyover Podcast, Ayla walks through seven quick changes that can stretch your battery well past what you are getting now. Tune in here to learn more. Today's sponsor, EnergyX, is offering investors a limited-time opportunity to invest in its rapidly growing lithium technology company before the current funding round closes this Thursday. |

US Reimposes Blockade, Sets Hormuz Toll
President Trump announced Monday the U.S. will reimpose its blockade of Iran's ports and charge ships a 20% fee to pass safely through the Strait of Hormuz, which carries a fifth of the world's oil. Calling America the "Guardian of the Hormuz Strait," he said the fee covers the cost of securing the route. All countries but Iran keep fair use, and the blockade resumes Tuesday. Iran's foreign minister countered that Tehran controls the strait and deserves the payment, though he added that 20% "is of course too much." The plan drew scrutiny because the U.S. had spent months calling such tolls illegal. It followed a weekend of renewed strikes on dozens of Iranian targets after the ceasefire collapsed. Oil rose nearly 10% on Monday. |
FCC Approves Giant Space Mirror in the Sky
Federal regulators have approved a California startup's plan to launch a giant space mirror that will catch sunlight and beam it back down to targeted spots on Earth long after the sun has set. The company, Reflect Orbital, aims to fly the craft later this year, unfurling a steerable reflector about 60 feet on a side. It hopes to have tens of thousands more circling the planet by 2035. The company promises sunlight on demand, powering solar farms after dark, lighting construction sites overnight, and aiding search-and-rescue crews. Read more about its uses here. Critics have expressed alarm. Astronomers warn the beam could shine four times brighter than a full moon, distracting airplane pilots, wreaking havoc on astronomical observations and interfering with the sleep rhythms of people and animals. |
Jurassic Park's Sam Neill Dies at 78
New Zealand actor Sam Neill, who spent decades charming audiences as Jurassic Park's levelheaded Dr. Alan Grant, has died at 78 of cancer. His family called the loss "sudden and unexpected." Neill only reached global fame at 43, after years in Australian and New Zealand films. Beyond the dinosaurs, he stole scenes in The Piano, The Hunt for Red October, and Peaky Blinders, playing heroes and villains with equal ease. Off screen, he tended a Central Otago farm where he named the animals after famous friends, from a rooster called Michael Fassbender to a cow named Helena Bonham Carter, and ran the organic winery he founded in 1993. New Zealand's prime minister called him "one of the greats." Here are photos of his career in the movies.
