Amazon and Corning Inc. announced a multibillion-dollar, multi-year agreement Monday that will create 1,000 direct jobs in North Carolina.

Through the deal, Amazon will source fiber optic cables from Corning to power its expanding AI data center network. Corning will use the investment to expand its Catawba County campus—which is being expanded to become the world’s largest optical fiber facility—along with hundreds of additional construction jobs during the buildout.

The partnership also includes an expanded Fiber Optic Technician Training Program with Catawba Valley Community College, creating an educational pipeline for North Carolinians to enter fiber optic manufacturing careers.

Corning stock surged roughly 10% on the announcement, reflecting investor confidence in the agreement's scale and staying power.

Billionaire investor Marc Lasry is pushing to bring a Major League Baseball team to Raleigh, betting big on the Triangle’s rapid growth. His Avenue Sports Fund, already invested in the NC Courage, eyes a stake in MLB expansion.

Lasry, who knows Hurricanes owner Tom Dundon, said he’s open to partnering with him on the effort. Dundon has long led efforts to secure an MLB franchise for Raleigh.

The move could strengthen Raleigh’s bid as the MLB considers expansion to 32 teams. Cities being considered include Raleigh, Charlotte, Montreal, Nashville, Orlando, Portland, Salt Lake City, Oakland, Sacramento, and Vancouver.

The region boasts strong demographics, a top-25 media market, and enthusiastic local support.

A New York Times investigation into autism therapy billing practices is putting North Carolina clinics at the center of a growing accountability debate.

The investigation raised concerns about overbilling and excess treatment hours in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy, questioning whether some providers are prescribing more care than children actually need.

Medicaid-funded ABA therapy costs in North Carolina surged from roughly $1.4 million to more than $660 million annually over five years.

State Auditor Dave Boliek’s office is conducting a large-scale review examining potential fraud and lax oversight in NC’s ABA therapy system. The review comes as the New York Times report lands in the middle of ongoing state budget discussions about Medicaid spending.
