Good Morning! On this day in 1953, the first production run of Corvette sports cars, developed by famed automotive designer Harley J. Earl, rolled off GM’s assembly line in Flint, Michigan.  SCOTUS Blocks Trump's Fed Firing
The Supreme Court on Monday blocked President Trump from firing Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook for now, in a 5-4 ruling that preserved the central bank's independence. In a separate decision, the justices let Trump fire Federal Trade Commission member Rebecca Slaughter, overturning a 90-year-old precedent and expanding presidential power over other independent agencies. Trump moved to fire Cook last August over mortgage fraud allegations that she denies. She is the first Fed governor targeted for removal in the central bank's 112-year history. The decision affirmed a long tradition of shielding the central bank from political interference. That protection appears unique to the Fed, now that the Court has allowed Trump to dismiss members at other independent agencies like the FTC. |
Holiday Heat Wave Hits USA dangerous heat wave is expanding across the central and eastern United States this week, with over 140 million people under heat alerts heading into the Fourth of July holiday. Temperatures will soar into the upper 90s and low 100s from the Great Lakes to the Mid-Atlantic, with heat indices reaching 105 to 115 degrees in cities including New York, Philadelphia, Washington, Chicago, and Boston. The National Weather Service called it the first widespread heat wave of the summer, with the heat dome expected to peak Thursday through Saturday and potentially set close to 100 new daily record highs by July Fourth. Forecasters urged residents to limit outdoor activity, stay hydrated, and seek air conditioning during the worst of the heat. |
