The Steamboat Fire, which ignited Friday evening near Kearny in Gila County, has forced two ranch communities to evacuate as the blaze rapidly expands near the former Troy mining site.

Authorities issued "GO" evacuation orders for Linx Ranch and Victory Ranch, citing imminent, life-threatening danger. Dripping Springs and Troy Ranch were placed on "SET" standby alerts.

The fire grew from roughly 250 acres to about 669 acres by Saturday and remained 0% percent contained. A Type 3 incident management team was deployed to the scene.

Gusty, dry winds and rocky terrain have challenged firefighters. The cause remains unknown, amid red-flag warnings and several other active wildfires burning across the state.

The new fire comes as several fires continue to burn across the state, including the Pocket Fire north of Sedona and the Sycamore Fire north of Globe.

Samuel Bateman, a polygamous sect leader already serving a 50-year federal sentence for child sex crimes, was convicted Friday on Arizona state child abuse charges in Flagstaff.

The case stemmed from 2022, when a passerby reported small fingers poking through a trailer's doors. Police stopped Bateman's vehicle and found three girls, ages 11 to 14, inside.

The enclosed trailer held only a makeshift toilet, a sofa, and camping chairs. Bateman led an offshoot of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and claimed more than 20 "spiritual wives."

Representing himself, Bateman testified he would never harm loved ones but admitted knowing the trailer was hot and poorly ventilated. His case is featured in a Netflix series.

Article Icon 1Arizona Holds Off on Fireworks Ban

With much of Arizona under a fire weather watch and wildfires burning throughout the state ahead of the Fourth of July, Gov. Katie Hobbs said Friday that a statewide fireworks ban is not under consideration.

While neighboring Utah took a stricter approach, with the Utah governor banning fireworks statewide except in designated areas, Hobbs pointed to existing state legislation as the framework already in place.

The City of Phoenix, meanwhile, tightened local rules, banning fireworks on city property, in parks, and within a mile of nature preserves. Violators face fines up to $2,500.

Ground fireworks sales remain legal statewide through July 6, though aerial types are prohibited. Some Arizona cities are offering drone shows as a safer alternative.

Science & Technology

Dear Flyover Reader,

If you chose not to invest in The Flyover’s fundraising campaign but still want to support us, this one's for you.

The Arizona Flyover will always be free. Producing it isn't.

So, two honest questions:

Do you rely on us for news without the spin? Is fact-first journalism worth fighting for?

If your answer is yes, hear me out.

Behind every morning email is a team of real people working to bring you the news clearly and fairly, without an agenda pulling the coverage one way or the other. We don't answer to advertisers or a corporate parent, we answer to you.

So today, we're asking: if The Arizona Flyover has earned a place in your morning, will you chip in to help keep it going strong?

Maybe you're wondering whether $10 really makes a difference. It does. But here's the thing—it makes a huge difference when a thousand of you decide to chip in together.

We've seen it work. When we opened The Flyover up to investment, thousands of readers stepped in—not billionaires, not a corporation with an angle, just people who read this every morning. That's how we stay independent: lots of readers, each doing a little, adding up to something no single backer could buy.

This is a simple, powerful way to support true, independent journalism.

So, will you be one of the thousand? Even $10 says you believe in what we're building. $50 or $100 helps us grow, launch new editions, and deliver more of the news America is hungry for.

Donations from readers are an important revenue source for The Arizona Flyover, and I hope you will help if you can.
