Chemours Settles PFAS Case for $450M

The federal government reached a roughly $450 million settlement with Chemours over decades of "forever chemical" contamination, but North Carolina officials say the deal does almost nothing for the state.

Announced Wednesday, the agreement settles claims over illegal discharges into the Cape Fear River and rivers in West Virginia and New Jersey. Chemours will pay a $22.5 million penalty and spend $90 million over 15 years on cleanup.

The Justice Department called it the first federal settlement against a PFAS manufacturer, saying it brings Chemours into compliance while letting the company keep making the chemicals for commercial and military use.

Gov. Josh Stein and Attorney General Jeff Jackson said federal negotiators never consulted the state and that most of the money will go elsewhere.

"This deal is an insult to the people of eastern North Carolina," Jackson said.

Jabil Plans $102M Henderson County Expansion

Healthcare-manufacturing company Jabil will invest more than $102 million and add at least 148 jobs at a new facility in Henderson County, the largest single-year investment in the county's history.

The 180,000-square-foot plant will rise at Jabil's existing Garrison Industrial Park site in East Flat Rock, where the company makes precision injection-molded components for healthcare customers. New jobs will pay average wages above $62,000.

Henderson County commissioners last week approved a $2 million incentive package tied to the project. Jabil, based in St. Petersburg, Florida, also runs a plant in Arden, north of the new site.

The expansion adds to a string of manufacturing gains in a mountain region still rebuilding from Hurricane Helene.

North Carolina Tops U.S. Snakebite Ranking

North Carolina has the highest per-capita rate of venomous snakebites of any state, according to a new national analysis.

The report estimates 856 venomous bites in the state each year, about 18.79 for every 100,000 residents. Texas logs far more bites overall, topping 1,400, but North Carolina ranks first once population is factored in.

Bites turn up across the state's landscapes: in Piedmont yards, on Blue Ridge trails, and in coastal-plain wetlands. Copperheads cause most of them and are rarely fatal, though cottonmouths, rattlesnakes, and the rare eastern coral snake also live here.

The NC Poison Control advises anyone bitten to stay calm, move away from the snake, and call 911 rather than trying to treat the wound themselves.
