Article Icon 1Judge Blocks NCAR Dismantling

A federal judge on Monday temporarily blocked the Trump administration from breaking up Boulder’s National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR), a federal weather and atmospheric research lab.

The injunction halts a federal plan to transfer control of the NCAR-Wyoming Supercomputing Center away from the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR), the Boulder-based nonprofit that runs NCAR.

Senior U.S. District Judge R. Brooke Jackson found the UCAR is likely to succeed in its March lawsuit, which argues NCAR’s planned dismantling is politically motivated retribution.

UCAR’s lawsuit alleges the administration sought to punish Colorado for the state’s use of mail-in voting and for the imprisonment of Tina Peters, who was released Monday.

The founder of Unjected, a community for unvaccinated people, is suing Recess Beer Garden in Denver over the bar’s cancellation of a meet-up last month.

Unjected announced the mixer via Instagram, billing it as the first stop on a multistate tour. Hundreds commented on the post, many criticizing the event and calling for Recess to cancel.

Recess canceled the meet-up days later, claiming organizers failed to get authorization and citing safety concerns spurred by a wave of “hateful language.” The lawsuit alleges Recess did agree to host and canceled based on would-be attendees’ “perceived medical status.”

Shelby Hosana, Unjected’s founder, is suing the bar and its ownership group for over $4 million each, alleging violation of civil rights laws, discrimination, and defamation.

The Boulder Jewish Festival is next Sunday, June 7, at Pearl Street Mall. This will be the first festival since last summer’s, which took place days after the deadly June 1 firebombing.

There will be heightened security at the event. In addition to honoring victims of last year's attack, the festival will celebrate Jewish culture, connection, and resilience.

Festival organizers, who are coordinating with Boulder police, the FBI, and other national agencies, note that security is proactive and precautionary and urge attendees to report anything concerning.

Organizers said returning to Pearl Street is "both difficult and deeply meaningful" for the community.
