Good Morning! On this day in 1888, the baseball poem Casey at the Bat, penned by Ernest Lawrence Thayer, was first published in the San Francisco Daily Examiner, with its famous final line (spoiler alert!): “But there is no joy in Mudville—mighty Casey has struck out.” A little fish in Texas and Mexico has thrived for 100,000 years without a single male in sight, cloning itself generation after generation. Scientists thought the all-female Amazon molly should have died out ages ago, but she's still swimming along just fine, as we explain in today's Science section. Today’s sponsor, Fisher Investments, is helping you plan your ideal retirement with a free guide that aligns your goals, timeline, and investment strategy for lasting financial confidence. |

Trump Kills $1.8 Billion 'Lawfare' Fund
President Trump's administration is scrapping its roughly $1.8 billion "anti-weaponization" fund, which would have paid people who say they were wrongly targeted by the Justice Department, acting Attorney General Todd Blanche told Congress Tuesday. The money came from settling Trump's lawsuit against the IRS over the leak of his tax returns. "We are not moving forward with the fund, period," Blanche said. The plan had drawn criticism from both parties, and Senate Republicans refused to pass the president's immigration funding bill until it was resolved. Two federal judges had also stepped in, with one temporarily blocking the fund and another reopening the IRS case to examine whether the settlement was collusive. Critics had warned it could pay people charged over the Jan. 6 protest. |
California Awaits Results from Tuesday's Vote
California held its primary Tuesday, but the tight governor's race could take days or even weeks to call. Mail ballots postmarked by Election Day are counted through June 9. Democrats Xavier Becerra, a former federal health secretary, and billionaire Tom Steyer are battling Republican Steve Hilton for the two spots that advance to the general election. More than 60 candidates ran to replace term-limited Gov. Gavin Newsom. No Republican has won a statewide race in California since 2006. In another big race, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass faced a surprisingly strong challenge from GOP candidate Spencer Pratt. Voters in five other states also picked nominees Tuesday, including Iowa, where Democrats chose Josh Turek to face Rep. Ashley Hinson, the winner of the Republican primary for the state's open U.S. Senate seat. |
Remote Work, Not AI, Hitting Young Grads
The rise of remote work, not artificial intelligence, explains most of the recent jump in joblessness among young college graduates, according to a new analysis from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. Employers say they're filling work-from-home jobs with experienced hires rather than fresh grads because of the difficulty of training someone over long distance. Unemployment among graduates under 29 rose from 3.1% before the pandemic to 3.7%, even as the rate for older, seasoned workers slipped. The findings push back on a popular theory that AI is wiping out entry-level roles, though the authors caution that this could change as the technology spreads.
