Severe thunderstorms swept across the Front Range on Monday, triggering a tornado watch for a dozen Colorado counties with warnings of softball-sized hail and wind gusts up to 75 mph.

The FAA issued a ground stop at DIA, delaying hundreds of flights as storms rolled through the metro area.

Denver's emergency sirens also went off inadvertently shortly after 4 p.m., with no destructive weather threat to the city, the third accidental citywide alert in five months.

Hail larger than quarters pelted Thornton, Wheat Ridge, and Arvada, while the Eastern Plains faced the worst of the storm threat with possible tornadoes.

Candidates from both parties squared off at Sunday's "Women Decide" forum, with U.S. Sen. Michael Bennet, Attorney General Phil Weiser, state Sen. Barb Kirkmeyer, and state Rep. Scott Bottoms outlining competing visions three weeks before the June 30 primary.

Kirkmeyer picked up an editorial endorsement from the Colorado Springs Gazette over the weekend, which called her the only credible Republican who could win in November.

Bennet holds a polling lead on the Democrat side, though a recent survey from a pro-Weiser group showed the gap narrowing, with more than a third of primary voters still undecided.

Ballots began arriving in mailboxes on Monday. Colorado's unaffiliated voters can participate by requesting a ballot for either party's primary.

Article Icon 1Experts: 'Embrace the Beige' in Drought

Colorado State University landscape experts are urging homeowners to rethink their lawns during the historic drought, coining the phrase "embrace the beige" to encourage acceptance of less-than-emerald turf this summer.

They promote "Coloradoscaping," an approach using native plants that thrive on minimal water, over the old approach of dumping gravel to create what one professor called "nightmare moonscapes."

Denver Water's turf removal discounts, up to $750, have already sold out due to record demand.

For those not ready for a full overhaul, a smart irrigation controller for about $150 can cut water use significantly. Garden in a Box kits are still available through Resource Central.
