Good Morning! On this day in 1896, Henry Ford unveiled and test-drove the Quadricycle, the first automobile he designed. The successful 4 a.m. trial run behind his Detroit home helped launch the future automotive pioneer’s career. The New York Public Library is celebrating America's 250th birthday by brewing beer from a 269-year-old recipe written by George Washington himself. The low-alcohol brew was meant to keep troops hydrated when they couldn't trust the water. A local brewery is making two versions: one faithful to the original and one with modern tweaks for those who aren't feeling the molasses.

Iran Strikes Kuwait Airport
Iranian missiles and drones struck Kuwait International Airport on Wednesday, killing one person and injuring 63 others as the shaky ceasefire with the United States continued to unravel. Kuwait's military said it intercepted 13 missiles and 17 drones since dawn. The U.S. shot down Iranian drones near the Strait of Hormuz and struck a military site on Iran's Qeshm Island. Meanwhile, President Trump said he was "perturbed" at Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu for "constantly fighting with Lebanon," endangering the ceasefire, and repeated that he would decide soon whether to sign a deal with Iran or resume the military campaign. Meanwhile, the American pilot of the F-15E recently downed over Iran was the same aviator shot down by Kuwaiti friendly fire at the start of the war, a coincidence one retired general compared to being struck by lightning twice. |
SpaceX Sets Record IPO Price
SpaceX is pricing its IPO at a fixed $135 per share to raise a record $75 billion, more than triple the largest U.S. IPO ever, with a valuation of $1.75 trillion. The investor roadshow begins on Thursday. If successful at that price, Elon Musk's net worth would land at roughly $988 billion, just short of making him the world's first trillionaire. His roughly 42% stake and 85% voting power would make SpaceX one of the most founder-controlled public companies in history. The company plans to debut on the Nasdaq on June 12 under the ticker SPCX, with up to 30% of shares reserved for retail investors, a move designed to tap into Musk's massive personal following. |
FBI Kills Man to End Hostage Standoff
The FBI shot and killed a man who held 10 people hostage inside a downtown Bakersfield, California, office building for more than 15 hours, ending the standoff early Wednesday. All hostages were found unharmed. The suspect, Anthony Scott Searles-Harris, 41, a registered sex offender with a history of violence, entered the Chase Bank building Tuesday afternoon and made bomb threats before barricading himself inside with several people. The building also houses a Kern County school district office. City Hall and police headquarters were locked down as a precaution while SWAT teams and negotiators surrounded the area. Two hostages were released during overnight negotiations before the FBI's Hostage Rescue Team moved in around 4:20 a.m.
