 Trump Approves Flood Emergency Declaration
President Donald Trump approved a federal emergency declaration for 28 flood-stricken Texas counties on Saturday, authorizing FEMA to coordinate disaster relief. The declaration covers counties across South and Central Texas—including Bexar, Kerr, Comal, Bandera, and Uvalde—hit by flooding that began July 12. The federal government will reimburse 75% of eligible emergency response costs, including search and rescue and emergency medical care. Gov. Greg Abbott signed a disaster declaration Friday in Uvalde, requesting federal aid. He said the state had deployed more than 2,700 personnel, 90 boats, and 20 aircraft to rescue more than 270 people. FEMA said additional assistance could be approved if damage assessments show more federal aid is warranted. |
Flooding Forces Camp Eagle EvacuationState troopers and volunteer firefighters evacuated about 325 campers from Camp Eagle in Real County on Saturday after flooding washed out the camp's main access road. The Texas Department of Public Safety said Real County Judge Bella Rubio requested the evacuation and that every camper made it out safely. Troopers from the DPS South Texas Region worked alongside the Center Point Volunteer Fire Department and local partners. Amphibious SHERP vehicles—one donated to the Center Point firefighters by Joe Rogan and Ron White—carried campers over the washed-out terrain to buses waiting at the highway. State Rep. Wes Virdell said the campers were never in danger during the severe weather. |
Boxer Hannah Rapp Killed in CrashRising professional boxer Hannah "Hanarchy" Rapp, 26, died Saturday after a driver struck her while she was cycling on FM 159 in Brazos County. The Brazos County Sheriff's Office said Charles Medina, 31, of Navasota, passed Rapp and another cyclist at a high rate of speed, then braked, reversed, and accelerated backward into her. Medina was charged with manslaughter and is held on a $250,000 bond. Investigators wrote that skid marks and the severity of the vehicle damage contradicted Medina's account that he was backing up slowly. Jail records show it was his 13th booking in Brazos County since 2012. Rapp moved from Indiana to Bryan-College Station about two years ago and fought for a WBC featherweight world title in June, all while working full-time at Texas A&M. |
