Good Morning! On this day in 1921, Miami held a special election that created the city's first city commission—five members, all bankers, which became known as the "bankers' commission." It replaced the old 13-member city council system. The Sarasota County animal shelter is asking the public for help as they are currently over capacity. Learn more in Around Florida. In case you missed it, this week on The Flyover Podcast, Amy broke down the five retirement mistakes that quietly derail people after the paycheck stops. A new Nationwide study found more than half of recent retirees regret how they planned, and the culprits usually aren't the ones you'd expect. From the luck of when the market turns to the quiet discomfort of spending your own savings, Amy walked through what trips people up and how to sidestep it before it costs you. Tune in here! It’s easy to overlook what happens behind prison walls, but for thousands across Florida, it’s where they’re searching for a fresh start. Access to hope, guidance, and purpose can change everything. That’s what today’s partner, Prison Fellowship, is helping make possible.

State Flags 23 Miami-Dade Buildings
A state report obtained by Local 10 News five years after the Champlain Towers South collapse lists 24 Florida buildings as "unsafe or uninhabitable," with 23 of them in Miami-Dade County. A footnote attributes 19 of those buildings to Aventura, though city officials dispute what that number implies. "In Aventura, we do not have the number of concerning issues as the report seems to imply there are," said Keven Klopp, the city's building official, adding that every inspected building remains safe to occupy. The report, Florida's first milestone check under its post-Surfside building safety law, also found that one in five city building departments statewide failed to submit inspection data. |
Airport Prepares Lawsuit against Jacksonville
The Jacksonville Aviation Authority's board will vote July 16 on suing the city, accusing the City Council of unlawfully diverting airport revenue and threatening JAA's independence. The dispute traces to a Council vote adding $13 million in unrequested spending to JAA's 2026 budget, including money for a training center at Cecil Airport. The FAA warned in June that such moves would likely be unlawful revenue diversion, citing "serious concern" over reported threats against JAA staff who followed federal rules. Council President Nick Howland countered that the changes passed 18-0 and fall within FAA-permitted uses meant to grow Cecil Airport into an "aerospace hub." JAA also says the city's general counsel improperly blocked it from hiring independent attorneys, calling it a conflict since the same office represents the council. |
NASA's Roman Telescope Nears Launch
NASA's Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope is undergoing final testing at Kennedy Space Center's Payload Hazardous Servicing Facility ahead of a targeted Aug. 30 launch. Technicians have raised the observatory into position and powered it up for system checks, with testing of its six solar panels and thermal blankets still ahead. Engineers will then load about 290 gallons of hydrazine fuel and seal the telescope inside a SpaceX payload fairing ahead of launch. Dr. Ken Kremer of Space UpClose said Roman's wide-field camera will outperform Hubble and the James Webb Space Telescope for surveying large swaths of the sky at once. Once launched, Roman will orbit roughly one million miles away at the Lagrange point, studying dark matter, dark energy and exoplanets from an unobstructed vantage point. |
