Good Morning! On this day in 1541, Spanish explorer Francisco Vรกzquez de Coronado described the Llano Estacado, the land south of the Canadian River in northwest Texas and northeast New Mexico. He told Spain's king the plains had "no more landmarks than if we had been swallowed up by the sea." F1 returns to Austin this weekend. Answer our Poll below about whether you'd take a spin in an F1 car, and stop by Et Cetera to see a giant COTA cowboy hat. Hit reply to let us know your motorsport of choice.

Musk Pledges SpaceX Stock for Kids
Elon Musk pledged Monday to give one of his own SpaceX shares to "every kid in America" next year, a gift worth more than $10 billion at Friday's closing price. Musk announced it on X, writing, "This will be the first of many." He didn't say which ages would qualify or how the shares would be distributed, though he could use Trump Accounts, the new investment accounts for children. The pledge came a day after AI company Anthropic said it would commit 5% of its shares to a new public benefit fund. Musk answered that post on X: "I recommend giving the shares directly to the public." Investor Brad Gerstner, who helped create Trump Accounts, called it the "largest philanthropic gift in history." Musk has fallen short on past pledges, including a promise of up to $1 billion to OpenAI, which received about $38 million. |
Supreme Court Takes Up Distilling Ban
The U.S. Supreme Court agreed Monday to decide whether a federal law dating to the 1860s can stop Americans from distilling whiskey, vodka, and other spirits at home, in a case brought by Texas hobbyists. Violators face up to five years in prison and a $10,000 fine. In April, the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals sided with the Texas-based Hobby Distillers Association against the ban, while the 6th Circuit upheld it in an Ohio case. Challengers call the 1868 law a relic of Reconstruction-era politics, arguing Congress overstepped its taxing power. Government lawyers counter that the ban keeps producers from dodging federal liquor taxes and warn that striking it would erode Congress' authority. Rick Morris, who started the Texas group in 2013, says distilling is the natural next step for hobbyists who already make beer and wine. The justices are expected to hear arguments next year and rule by the end of June. |
State Fair Wraps Up
The State Fair of Texas, which wrapped Sunday, drew nearly 2.1 million people during its 24-day, 140th-anniversary run, about 100,000 more visitors than last year, fair leaders said. The busiest day was Oct. 10, when more than 203,000 fairgoers turned out for the Texas-Oklahoma game at the Cotton Bowl. Visitors downed about 450,000 Fletcher's corny dogs and hauled off 500,000 Midway prizes worth about $1.8 million. Vendors handed leftover food to pantries near Fair Park on Monday, adding to the 110,655 pounds the fair collected for the North Texas Food Bank. Youth livestock and scholarship programs raised a record $2.7 million, and 103 students received $1.2 million in college scholarships. Among the crowds was a 77-year-old Ohio man who got bored a week into retirement and set out to visit every state fair in America. Texas was Jim Chew's 30th, and he rated it "a 9 or 10 out of all the fairs." |
