Fake Luxury Watches Seized at DFW

The 11 counterfeit Richard Mille watches federal officers seized at DFW Airport arrived in several shipments from China in September. No one has been arrested, a U.S. Customs and Border Protection spokesman said.

The $2.6 million price tag is what the watches would have cost at retail if genuine, not the value of the knockoffs. That works out to roughly $236,000 apiece for genuine watches from the Swiss luxury brand.

The shipments were bound for several destinations across the Southeast before CBP trade experts flagged the watches as fake. Officers seized them because they bore counterfeit versions of registered trademarks. Authorities haven't named anyone involved.

"The sale of fake goods often funds criminal organizations involved in money laundering, drug trafficking, and other illicit trade," said CBP Area Port Director Jayson Ahern. The agency says handbags, wallets, footwear, jewelry, and electronics are also frequent targets of counterfeiting.

Baylor Fires Coach Dave Aranda

Baylor fired football coach Dave Aranda on Sunday, a day after a 25-24 loss at Kansas, and named defensive coordinator Joe Klanderman interim head coach.

The loss, which followed a 17-6 home defeat to TCU, ended Baylor's 14-game winning streak over Kansas dating to 2007. Klanderman, who ran Kansas State's defense for six seasons, is set to coach his first game Friday at UCF.

Aranda went 40-40 in seven seasons, peaking in 2021 with a school-record 12 wins, a Big 12 title, and a Sugar Bowl victory over Ole Miss. Baylor has gone 26-31 since then and last appeared in the AP Top 25 in October 2022.

"While this is a difficult moment, we believe a change in leadership is necessary at this time for our program," athletic director Doug McNamee said. Names floated for the job include USC's Lincoln Riley and Boise State's Spencer Danielson.

Aubrey Names New School after Custodian

Aubrey ISD's superintendent asked retired custodian Marilyn Hampton to unroll a red carpet at Wednesday's school board meeting, and Hampton burst into tears when she saw the name printed on it: Marilyn Hampton Elementary School.

Hampton, 76, spent 39 years cleaning the district's buildings, but she also bought school supplies, helped students study for tests, and ran the football ticket booth. The Denton County district's fifth elementary school, under construction on FM 2931, opens next August.

The only one of eight siblings to finish high school, Hampton said she once felt like a failure for never going to college. Now she sees it differently: "God put you where you are supposed to be."
