An Ohio appeals court ruled Thursday that EdChoice, which helps families pay private school tuition with more than $1.4 billion in taxpayer funds, violates the Ohio Constitution. Vouchers will keep flowing pending an expected appeal.

All three judges on the 10th District panel are Democrats, and they unanimously sided with the more than 300 public school districts that sued.

Judge David Leland wrote that EdChoice funds a separate school system lacking state oversight, arguing the “choice” belongs to private schools rather than parents.

The state is expected to appeal to the Ohio Supreme Court, where Republicans hold a 6-1 majority.

The FBI is investigating after postal inspectors intercepted a suspicious letter containing white powder bound for Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose’s office.

Election offices in Louisiana and Oklahoma received similar packages Tuesday, though no injuries were reported and authorities in Louisiana found no evidence of harmful substances.

LaRose told county boards of elections to “be vigilant in the days ahead” and vowed that “cowardly threats” won’t deter his office from delivering secure elections.

Article Icon 1Forecasters Favor a Milder Ohio Winter

Ohioans could catch a break from the cold this winter, as NOAA’s newly released winter outlook favors warmer-than-average temperatures across the Midwest from December through February.

Forecasters credit a very strong El Niño, with Pacific Ocean temperatures closely mirroring 1997, a winter when Lake Erie never froze over, and Youngstown recorded its least snowy February on record.

Strong El Niño winters typically bring significantly less snow on average, though milder air could mean more rain, mixed precipitation, or ice.
