Good Morning! On this day in 1781, British Gen. Charles Cornwallis surrendered some 8,000 troops to George Washington at Yorktown, Virginia, effectively ending the Revolutionary War. Cornwallis pleaded illness and skipped the ceremony, and when his deputy tried to hand his sword to the French commander, he was directed to Washington instead, who passed the honor to his own second-in-command. Holiday airfares are the highest in at least a decade, with Thanksgiving fares up 31%. Today’s poll asks whether you’re flying anywhere this holiday season. The most important places in American history aren’t where you think. Some of the moments that shaped this country happened in towns with one stoplight, a single gas station, and a tumbleweed rolling across Main Street. Do you ever wonder which town spent three years officially not existing while it helped win a world war? Or where the most famous invention in American history finally got off the ground? One of these towns could be in your state, and you may have even driven through it without knowing what happened there. On today’s episode of Flyover Focus, we count down 10 small towns that changed American history. Tune in here! Flying cars are getting closer to everyday life, and today’s sponsor, Doroni, is giving investors a chance to get involved. With a share price change coming after Oct. 22, there’s still time to invest at the current price. Get the details below. |

Holiday Airfares Hit a 10-Year High
Flying for the holidays will cost more this year than at any point in at least a decade, according to booking data from Hopper. The average domestic round trip is running 31% higher than last year for Thanksgiving and 23% higher for Christmas. That works out to about $402 for Thanksgiving and $452 for Christmas, driven by jet fuel costs tied to the Iran war and travelers booking earlier than usual. International fares are up too, with the biggest jumps to Europe, Mexico, and the Caribbean. The day matters as much as the destination. Returning the Sunday after Thanksgiving runs over $600, while Thanksgiving Day itself and Black Friday are the cheap seats. The weekend before Christmas is the priciest departure window. Hopper’s advice is to book before Halloween. Christmas hotel rates are up 18% as well, averaging $197 a night. |
4 Soldiers Killed in Alberta Base Fire
Four Canadian soldiers died and 39 were hospitalized, at least 19 in critical condition, when a “violent, fast-moving” grass fire swept a training range at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright, Alberta, on Saturday. Prime Minister Mark Carney called it one of the worst peacetime tragedies in the military’s history on home soil. Soldiers were throwing live grenades and running attack drills when a fire more than half a mile away shifted with gusts near 62 mph and reached the range’s administrative area in under a minute. Maj. Gen. Wade Rutland said it's “not normal” for a fire to move that far in 30 to 60 seconds. Officials said there was no sign of outside interference and that no oil or gas infrastructure was involved, despite reports of explosions. The four were all with 3rd Battalion, Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry, based in Edmonton and preparing for a deployment to Latvia. Twenty-two ambulances and eight aircraft answered the call, and Albertans lined up to give blood. |
France Erupts in Riots, Unrest Spreads in EU
French shop owners spent Sunday sweeping up glass after cost-of-living marches that drew 550,000 people Saturday collapsed into looting and arson in Paris, Marseille, Lyon, Bordeaux, and a dozen other cities. Police made nearly 2,400 arrests, and close to 1,000 officers were hurt. Masked groups disabled security cameras before smashing into pharmacies, supermarkets, and luxury boutiques. In Limoges, a fire set by protesters sent the clock tower spire of the 140-year-old city hall crashing down in flames. See a video here. City halls in Marseille and Lille were ransacked. The marches grew out of weeks of student protests over school conditions, with fuel and rent costs driven up by the Middle East war. In a Sunday night address, Macron blamed “ultra-left splinter groups” and said those who looted must pay for the damage. Solidarity protests spread across Europe over the weekend, with police turning water cannons on crowds in Brussels and Milan and tens of thousands marching in Lisbon.
