On his very first rescue mission, Coast Guard Petty Officer Scott Ruskan, 26, helped save nearly 200 people from catastrophic flash floods in central Texas.

The New Jersey native and former accountant was part of an aerial rescue team that responded to Camp Mystic, a Christian girls’ camp hit hard by the Guadalupe River’s rise over the Fourth of July.

With roads washed out and boats unable to reach the site, Ruskan stayed on the ground to triage survivors and guide helicopter crews. He said his role quickly shifted from emergency response to comforting scared campers and grieving parents, many still in pajamas.

Working alongside Army Blackhawks and Coast Guard MH-65s, Ruskan directed hours of high-risk evacuations. Despite national praise, including a shout-out from Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, he downplayed his role, saying, “Any one of us, if anyone else was on duty that day, they would have done the same thing as us.”

Zac Bauermaster, a 39-year-old elementary school principal in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, is gaining national attention for his upbeat hallway routines and deep commitment to student well-being.

His videos, showcasing high-fives, fist bumps, and warm morning greetings, have drawn millions of views, but his focus remains on building a school where kids and staff want to come each day. From Fist Bump Fridays to breakfast with students who show kindness, Bauermaster is creating a culture rooted in trust, not just test scores.

He credits his own struggles with anxiety for shaping his approach, saying he makes it a point to show up on the hard days because that’s when students need him most.

A hiker who fell 26 feet into a crevasse on Switzerland’s Fee Glacier was rescued last Friday thanks to his Chihuahua, which led search crews to the nearly invisible hole.

The man had plunged through a snow bridge and used a walkie-talkie to call for help, but it was his dog’s steady presence atop a nearby rock that helped rescuers locate him, according to Air Zermatt, the Swiss helicopter rescue team.

While most teams rely on working breeds, this football-sized pup proved just as critical by staying put and leading rescuers when technology failed to pinpoint the location.
