Polk County firefighters typically work a 24-hour shift every third day on a rotating schedule. The agreement includes a paid 24-hour "Kelly Day" every seventh shift as part of a 21-day cycle, giving firefighters an extra opportunity to rest and recreate. The term "Kelly Day" originated in Chicago in 1936 when then-Mayor Edward J. Kelly gave firefighters a day off for every seven on duty. Chicago firefighters were so fond of Kelly that they named him an Honorary Fire Chief. The contract includes a 2% cost-of-living adjustment plus a 4.1% pay raise for the first and third years. The "Kelly Day" schedule is expected to be implemented by Oct. 12, 2026. | Aventura Mall Named Best in the U.S. USA Today readers ranked Aventura Mall in South Florida the No. 1 indoor mall in the country.
