 | Thursday, July 3, 2025 | | Good Morning! On this day in 1884, the first public hospital in Central Texas opened in Austin. The City-County Hospital was renamed in honor of hospital board chairman Dr. Robert J. Brackenridge in 1929, and it remained in operation until 2017, when it was replaced by Dell Seton Medical Center at The University of Texas. Water and oil typically don't mix, but when they do, fracking is probably why. Check out today's Roundup section to learn why the Texas Supreme Court weighed in on this issue. Yesterday, we let you know about our editor in chief, David, who underwent surgery on Monday, and your response was unbelievable. So many of you responded with prayers, hugs, and heartfelt messages. That outpouring of love must've helped: David was released from the hospital last night and is resting at home now. We will be sharing your wishes with David when he is better. We're so grateful for your kindness, and so lucky you are a part of The Texas Flyover family. Today, the language learning software Babbel is sponsoring us and offering a special Fourth of July sale to our readers. The landmark ruling originated from a dispute in Reeves County between Cactus Water Services and COG Operating. Disposing of produced water—a mix of formation water, fracking fluid, and naturally occurring chemicals—is a significant cost for drilling companies. However, new restrictions on wastewater injection wells have led producers to consider other solutions, like reusing it in fracking operations or treating it for resale. There are also pilot projects testing the feasibility of using produced water to grow crops. One company announced last year that it had successfully extracted lithium from produced water in the Permian Basin, where drilling activity generates about half a billion gallons of produced water every day. In its opinion, the court dismissed the argument that produced water is groundwater, which belongs to the landowner. "While produced water contains molecules of water, both from injected fluids and subsurface formations, the solution itself is waste—a horse of an entirely different color," the justices wrote. | High-End Auto Theft Ring Busted Police recovered six luxury vehicles worth an estimated $1.5 million from three suspects in South Dallas last month. The investigation, led by Plano and Dallas police with help from the FBI and Texas Department of Public Safety, began after the theft of a 2024 Rolls-Royce Spectre from a valet stand on June 6. SWAT officers executed search warrants at two homes on June 11, apprehending Miguel Hernandez, 27, Salvador Hernandez, 29, and Oscar Ivan Valdez, 28. The recovered vehicles include a Rolls-Royce Cullinan, a Rolls-Royce Spectre, Cadillac Escalade-V, Maserati Levante, Audi RS7, and Mercedes S63 AMG. See photos. Police also recovered firearms, body armor, and tools commonly used in auto thefts. Valdez remains in custody with 15 active felony warrants, while the two other suspects have been released on bond. | Space Shuttle Could Be Coming to Houston The Congressional budget reconciliation bill, known as the "One Big Beautiful Bill Act," includes $85 million in funding intended to relocate the space shuttle Discovery from the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum to Houston's Johnson Space Center. While neither the space shuttle nor its intended destination is specifically mentioned in the bill's text, Sen. John Cornyn celebrated the passage of the provision, saying that "it's long overdue for Space City to receive the recognition it deserves by bringing the Space Shuttle Discovery home." When the space shuttle program ended, Houston missed out on getting one of the four remaining orbiters, which went to Florida's Kennedy Space Center, Los Angeles, New York City, and Washington, D.C. In April, Cornyn and his colleague Sen. Ted Cruz introduced legislation aimed at "righting this egregious wrong." However, the Smithsonian estimated it could cost as much as $325 million to move Discovery and build a new facility. "Our position is that the Discovery is staying right where it is," said National Air & Space Museum Director Chris Browne. | | Flying together with our sponsor Think You Can't Learn a Language?
