Resendiz Memorial Service in Norfolk

The Navy hosted a private memorial service for sailor Angelina Resendiz at Naval Station Norfolk, a month after she went missing and her body was found near the base.

"They did it for her, they did it for the shipmates, to help them grieve and mourn and have some type of closure for her," her mother, Esmeralda Castle, said, adding that about 100 people attended the service.

Resendiz, 21, was last seen in her barracks on May 29, but a missing person's report alert wasn't filed for two days. Her body was found on June 9.

Navy investigators have a sailor in custody in connection with the case, but they have not released details.

House Explosion Trial Begins

Former propane company employee Roger Bentley is on trial in Loudoun County, charged with involuntary manslaughter.

Bentley was at a home in Sterling in February of 2024 to investigate reports of a leaking underground propane tank. He allegedly decided to let the tank leak out the remaining propane, perhaps thinking it would seep into the ground.

Instead, the propane tank exploded, destroying the home, killing one firefighter, and injuring 13 other people.

Prosecutors say Bentley could have mitigated the danger, but failed to act. If convicted, he could face a decade in prison.

USS JFK Launch Delayed

The U.S. Navy announced that the aircraft carrier USS John F. Kennedy will not be delivered until March 2027, two years behind schedule. The Navy reported that it needs more time to work on the new ship's arresting gear and weapons elevators.

The ship is Newport News Shipbuilding's second Ford-class aircraft carrier. Its sister ship, the USS Gerald R. Ford, also faced delays during construction but is now in active service.

Because of the delay, the Navy will have 10 carriers in service next year instead of the planned 11 after the USS Nimitz is decommissioned.
