Gov. Josh Stein signed four bills into law Wednesday morning that focus on criminal penalties and processes, pharmacy regulations, and support for military families.

Senate Bill 311 penalizes protesters or striking workers who block roads or businesses with fines or prison time, and steepens penalties for burglary, package theft, shoplifting, reckless driving, street racing, and other offenses. Senate Bill 429 makes it harder for people convicted of crimes to request a motion for appropriate relief, which is a tool for proving they were wrongfully convicted.

Senate Bill 479 protects pharmacies from unfair business practices that hike prescription drug prices and helps independent pharmacies promote access to health care in rural areas.

Finally, Senate Bill 118 assists military families as they relocate to North Carolina by simplifying processes like getting driver's licenses and enrolling children in public schools.

Chapel Hill native Keith Samuel Siegel, released from Hamas captivity on Feb. 1, is urging President Trump to help push Israel and Hamas to agree to a new ceasefire and bring the remaining 50 Hamas hostages home.

"I believe he has a lot of strength, power, and ability to … get all of the hostages back and bring an end to the war," Siegel told the BBC in a July 7 interview. Sen. Ted Budd, R-NC, also weighed in on X Monday, stating, "Hamas must release them or face swift consequences."

The Trump administration plans to meet with Iran within the next week, according to Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff.

Siegel and his wife, Aviva, were among 253 hostages taken captive by Hamas on Oct. 7, 2023. Aviva was released after 51 days in captivity.
