Gov. Ron DeSantis announced a “landmark” agreement between the state and federal government to expedite the construction of the Everglades Agricultural Area (EAA) Reservoir for completion by 2029.

The new agreement between the state and the Army Corps of Engineers will allow Florida to take the lead in many areas of the project, including completing the EAA Reservoir system and outflow pumps and stations five years earlier than expected.

The reservoir, located south of Lake Okeechobee, will store over 78 billion gallons of water—covering an area larger than Manhattan—and deliver up to 470 billion gallons of clean water annually while helping to balance the salinity of Florida Bay.

When completed, the reservoir will provide clean freshwater to the Everglades in the dry season (December to June) and support the Biscayne Aquifer, the primary source of drinking water for South Florida.
